i read up about struts, but im not quite sure what they are...

would struts be the same as coil overs?

Oh how to explaine this? On our cars we have struts up front and shocks in back. The difference is that the strut is actually a structural part of the suspention in place of an upper control arm. Remove it and the hub(spindle) just sort of hanges there supported by the ball joint on the Lower control arm. Where as a shock simply bolts to the lowercontrol arm and the chassis. Remove it and the HUB is still supported by the upper and lower control arms.

That was my best try, I am sure some one can do better.
