I just got my oil changed at Midas, because I was too lazy to jack my car up.

I gave them an OEM Nissan filter and 5 liters of Mobil 1 Tri-synthetic. I know I only need 4 quarts, but I wasn't sure how many quarts in a liter so I bought five. Anyways, I gave all 5 to the mechanic with the filter.

So they changed the oil and filter and sent me on my way. After about 1.5 hours of driving I put the car to sleep and checked the oil the following morning. To my suprise I have way too much oil, I mean the line on the dipstick goes all the way up to that dimple.

I was just wondering how damaging can having too much oil be? The car seemed to run fine last night after the change. I thought the mechanic is supposed to check the dipstick after he pours in the new oil? And I could swear that he only used 4 liters, or so it looked like it.

So, any thoughts on the extent of possible damage?

If you only added a little bit more oil you should be fine. Too much oil causing something called crankslap when means the oil level is so high that the crank slaps it when it turns. This can lead to a noticable decrease in performance. WAY too much oil and you risk damaging the seals. I suggest you jack the car up and drain some of the oil until it's at an appropriate level. Yes it's messy but that's what you get for being lazy

Trust me if you saw some of the things that go on at places like that you would never take your car there again.

Oh I know, last time I'm doing that.

Out of all the mechanics there I had to get the fattest and greasiest one. And he had to get into my car to drive it in. Then while working on it he was eating a bag of chips!! At which point he got back in to drive the car out... what a bastard.
