SR swap in 89, what to do about the guages?

I'm starting to get all the little bits and peices together since my engine is shipping sometime this week and I forgot that the tach won't work since I have an 89. So my question is (I assume that the 91-94 gauges fit) if I get the newer gauge set, can I change the mileage somehow? or would it be better to just buy an after market tach? Thanks

Here's what you can do...

You can just change the tach.

Take your original cluster out, remove the original tach, and swap a tach from a JDM or '91-'94 US cluster into it. That way, you keep the original speedometer and odometer.

if you are in need of a JDM 9000rpm tach, I'll be having one spare within the week. Let me know.

I'll also be having a 91-94 Tach available.

(clusters too if you wish)

Something that should be noted FOREVER:

The tach in the HUD cluster is SMALLER than the tach in the analog cluster. I have a 91 DOHC tach in my 89 w/HUD. To install it, I first of all had to trim a weird thingie that was sticking out all funky-like. Then once I got it to fit, you can JUST BARELY see the tick marks from around the HUD trim bezel. It works fine, though. All I'm saying is BE AWARE of this.

Oh, and one more thing...the lights in the HUD cluster have these plastic "extenders" on them that actually illuminate the gauge (and the guage has a printed matrix on the back of it to even out the lighting). Thing is, the "extenders" in the HUD cluster are not lined up for the analog tach...so the night-lighting is uneven. Once again, it works...but not perfect. I will most likely sell mine eventually and get a real JDM Silvia tach.

Thumbs down Fark

uiuc240: I have a '89 that I'm doing a SR swap into now, and it has a HUD... the cluster I got is analog. So basically I'm forked and have to do that ghetto cutting job you did right?

Can't I just take the gauge cluster off of a JDM Cluster that has a HUD and use that?

BTW, the tach I have is from a JDM analog cluster, to clear up any confusion...

Yes, that's exactly what you have to do. Unless you'd like to take the trouble of getting the SOHC gauge face off, and put it on the DOHC tach. I considered this...but it would have still had the super-lame low redline. At least the DOHC doesn't have it until 6900 rpm. Not that it matters...but at a glance, when shifting, having the higher redline is important to me. Is it to you?

Yes. That's exactly what I'm thinking of doing, just so I can have a true 7500 rpm redline. But it's extra money I just don't really care about at this point. The tach I have is working, and that's good enough for me.
