s13 read this if u have an sr20det or a ka24det

hey guys iv been trying to figure out what to do wiht my 240 i read in the sept issue of sport compact car an article about all the different engines u can put in ur 240 and i dont know wheather to turbo my engine or go wiht the sr20... some feed back form the people who have done the swap wld be appreciated and if u turbo charged ur ka also let me know... i wld like to know exactly how much it cost, where u got the engine and was it problems easy ,etc. thanks for ur help

To be perfectly honest with you, turbocharging your ka or flat out swapping in a sr will cost you about the same in the end, that is if you do it right. An SR right now can cost you anywhere between $1499 to $2500 depending on if you decide you just want the engine itself or if you want the front clip (which includes the front bumper, lights and fenders of the model Silvia your SR comes from). In addition to that you'll also have freight fees which can easily tack on an additional $400-$500. Now you're up to at least $3,000 if you bought the front clip, and you still have to pay to have it installed if you don't have the experience to do it yourself, and you'll also have to pay to get your ECU wiring harness set up for left hand driver. Once you finishing adding all those expenses, and the price of anything you have to replace, you'll have spent the same amount it would have cost you to purchase a turbo kit for the KA, of course that isn't considering the price of upgrading your fuel management to handle the turbo, but you get the point. The choice of whether or not to swap in the SR or turbocharge the KA is up to you really. They both give you decent power and for around the same price. You can find information for both of these procedures in Search, and since you read SCC, they have info for their Silvia swap project on their website as an example. My opinion is:


SR Pros:
-OEM turbo setup
-Doesn't sound like a KA
-Engine meant for chassis
-Aftermarket quality JDM parts (available in Japan..but at least they're out there)
-Plug n' Play aftermarket parts

SR Cons:
-Used engine 30,000mi+ in mystery condition (even w/ leakdown + visual inspection)
-Nissan dealerships probably won't touch them
-After the swap you still have OEM 205-220HP
-Becoming too trendy
-SR factory service manuals in English (as far as I know) only available for S14 engine....from Australia....for a pretty penny.

KA-T Pros:
-2.4 Liters provide more torque & heartier exhaust pulse
-More unique than SR swap
-Replacement KA parts readily available
-Rebuilt engine will have 0 miles on it
-The engine (w/o the turbo anyways) is legal in CA
-You can build up the engine peice by peice..and spread the cost over time instead of plunking down $2,500 all at once.
-240sx factory service manuals cheap and available

KA-T Cons:
-Cutting corners w/junkyard parts is tempting & can be risky (turbos)
-No JDM aftermarket parts made specifically for the KA-T
-Few American made parts made specifically for the KA-T
-ECU retunes expensive





Thats how I view it. Some people will see it differently and I may have forgotten some things on the list (add them if you'd like).

if you rebuild u'r KA there is another (at least) $1k so actually an sr will likely have less mileage, than an average ka (120k's) this is why i chose SR, i felt having to revuild a ka to encounter a turbo would be more money alone...

well.. if you rebuild your ka.. you are actually making a built engine ready to handle boost.

of course you can just turbo a used ka, but why not just throw the extra $1000 in there to get forged rods and pistons. you're set after that to handle more boost safely as long as you have enough fuel.

If you have to fabricate and retrofit parts for the KA-T setup, you are going with something that wasn't researched and developed by a company that could afford to put $$ into it...and develop it specifically for that engine (Tomei, Jun, Greddy, etc). Please dont even mention JWT. Their monopoly on modifying the KA's fuel curve leads me into the next paragraph.

Its a CON because having a selection of aftermarket parts is a good thing. It keeps the companies competitive and the prices from skyrocketting. Also....not only do these products have a warranty...but the warranty + tech support covers using that product for that specific application (KA engine in this case). Try installing a SAFC from Apexi on your KA-T....having trouble...and calling tech support over there. They'd say...."KA24DE?? that was never turboed....voids warranty...**** off". Get my point?

i'm closing the KA vs SR thread. at the very least.. there hasn't been one of these in quite a while.
