please explain this turbo setup to me - Zilvia.net Forums | Nissan 240SX (Silvia) and Z (Fairlady) Car Forum

i was always under the impression that the intake pipe from the filter went to the hole in the turbo where you can see the compressor but ive seen a lot of setups that look like this (that hole is just left open)

how does this work? do people run without filters or is there a filter somewhere in there?

Most likely a blowthrough setup where the map/maf is placed after the cold side of the turbo and before the intake manifold.

He probably just went Air flowless using the MAP sensor instead of the MAF sensor. That is how my set up is.

They decided not to use a filter in this setup. It usually goes where you mentioned before. Just that he/she wants to be living on the edge without it.

What 240Stilo said. Better for suction, worse for turbine longevity.

No filter = Motor crapping out quicker.

I can see how this set up would reduce the life of the turbo but can someone explain to me how this would effect the life of the motor?? thanks

Debri will enter the turbo and circulate to the combustion chamber causing valves and cylinder wall damage.

What goes in must... go in further.
They probably don't drive around on the street like that. It's a dyno shot or something.
On high powered MK4s, at around 1000hp, you can pick up 40rwhp by removing the air filter. Even if it was the best flowing filter on the market. That's why they do it.

ever see those turbo drag cars? they have the compressor usually mounted directly to a hole in the bumper...

it makes sense to use that kind of setup on a dyno or a drag car....but street driving is just dumb

thanks for the explanation guys, yea i guess i could see if you had a drag car that you rebuild all the time, but doing that on a street car would be so stupid.

correct man no real street use for the filter delete unless you can afford to replace rebuild stuff rather often
