Getting Cable

Well in addition to building a new computer, I'm finally getting cable! I showed my mom the wonderful world of emailing family members across the world and she got hooked. Now she wants internet in her computer. What are some good cable plans and how much/what are some good hubs/routers?

i like netgear routers (specifcally fm114p) lil more than linksys, dlink ones are pure crap though
my comp stays on irc for weeks and the netgear is the only one that doesnt have hickups - dlink is bout every 2-6 hours , linksys does a pretty good job

ull probly end up gettin one from ure cable company w/ service
if u end up buyin one, buy refurbished/white box/nonretail to save some $$

I have D-Link wireless, it works pretty good. The only real problem I have with it is that it's 2.4GHz and all the phones in the house are 2.4GHz as well, so about 50% of the time when someone picks up the phone the shit goes out...

I use a USR wireless router. Works perfect. Reset it one time in 6 months of use (and it wasn't even the problem I was experiencing).

Linksys WRT54G

I sell and install these, and Linksys is the most reliable that I've worked with.

That's really funny... my experience is exactly the opposite.
I've (thru helping others) dealt with a lot of shoddy equipment (and ALL the home networking stuff is low quality, ALL of them... which is why I run Cisco gear hehee).

Of all the brands and models of routers/switches/hubs i've tried, Linksys I would NEVER recommend to anyone. Goes against most reports I know, but I've been a sysadmin for 5 years, and into computers my whole life, in that time I've noticed 2 trends:
If I buy/recommend/approve purchase of any Linksys networking component OR any Western Digital HD (another highly reputed company), it WILL fail. Conversely, I run ALL D-Link networking gear @home (cept a few cheapie trendnet USB wireless adapters). No problems and better consistant speed than any of my previous purchases (including SMC, Linksys, Trendnet, Netgear, Hawking, HP, etc). Also I've lost to date 17 WD HDs, yet not a single Maxtor (the "cheapie" brand) has failed....

shooty: a lot of wireless routers have issues if not setup quite right... my D-Link routers have only needed to be reset once in the past year, and that was because the ISP was doing a hardware upgrade that required a reset.

I've noted that some companies don't like to play nice... example... D-Link XtremeG router + trendnet usb wireless adapter = hiccups from client.... Linksys seems to run with about anything, but whether it does it with any efficiency is another matter...

FWIW, those are the experiences of someone that does this crap ALL DAY LONG... every friggin day
...not that i'm starting to get bitter about my job or anything....

Agree...I thought we were talking SOHO environment. For business-grade installations. I've been using the Cisco Aironet 1200 Series and their wireless adapters. But, I figured that not everyone wants to spend $600+ on an access point.

ok... your point being? :P

It's still gear designed/created/manufactured by the same people as before they were bought out... it's not like cisco came it and changed everything, it's just new ownership... their first real product dev'd together (AFAIK) is their new VoIP endeavor.... which I personally hope fails miserably.

The Aironet 1200 Series is amazing.

You can set multiple SSIDs and create multiple "virtual" radios. The security features let you put traffic on different VLANs and the radios are fully configurable, allowing you to set the specific power levels.

I might have to get one from my home office, so I can play with all the features, especially since I can get them at cost from my distributor.

when i was talkin bout havin hiccups, i didnt mean havin to reset the router.
i am refering to not being able to maintain a consistent transfer that would result in failure
if i checked the logs, it would not say that conn has been reset nor would i d/c from server
the problem was that there is a min transfer rate setup and the dlink would fall below it for a split second, endin the transfer
i have all my comps WIRED and dhcp on
i returned it and got the netgear for 25$ cuz it was refurbished (hard to beat)
since then we switched from speakeasy sdsl to sbc pos dsl and im gettin the same problem every once and a while
i only reset my router when i have issues with my dsl
i miss havin a hub with static ips

btw ive had a maxtor go out - my ibm deathstar took it with it :hammer:

if u have an asus mb with the wifi port thats also an easy way to get an ap

I am shopping tonight for a Linksys router to connect my PS2, and XBOX.....I am stuck between the Linksys BEFW11S4 - $59 with $20 off, AND WRT54G - $69 with $30 off...

I just want one that works with both, and from what i read , these both do....

Go with the WRT54G...it supports the higher wireless speeds.
