loss of brake pressure

I changed my rear brake pads yesterday, bled the brakes (because I opened one of the brake lines to try and relieve pressure on a stubborn piston), took the car for a test drive and everything checked out ok. Then on the way to work today (which is about a 30-40 mile drive), when i was about a mile from my building, my brake pedal decides to lose all pressure and drops to the floor. The car did come to a stop though. Anyway, when I pulled into my parking lot, I could smell brake fluid, but when i checked to see if i lost any fluid. I didn't. Now the brakes have more pressure, but they are still fairly soft. So, i'm now sitting at work, hoping to make it home so i can try to resolve the issue.

The only thing two things that i can think of that could have caused problem are A.) didn't bleed the brakes enough or B.) when i pushed the passenger side piston into the caliper, a small section of the piston dust boot came over the top of the piston, and i left it that way. I didn't think much of it, but could this have been the problem? Any help would be appreciated.

wait.

the piston rubber dust boot came over the top of the piston?

is it getting pinched between the piston and the brake pad?

that is bad dude.

edit:

oh yah. pedal to the floor = bad m/c *or* leak in the hydraulic system. since you smelled fluid, its probably a leak. so start lookin. you wont see a slow fluid loss in the m/c because it takes alot of time for the air (coming in at the source of the leak) to travel all the way up there.

Had the same problem today. Did them yesterday, bled them twice and today lost pressure. When I checked, all my brake fluid was gone but I found no puddles. Surely enough it was leaking through one of the brake line connections that my friend left a bit loose. Problem solved after tightening it and bleeding it one more time.

Breaker bar...?

Replace them with speed bleeders while you're at it, save yourself a ton of trouble next time you bleed brakes.

Check all the bleeder screws and line connections for leakage as well.

I broke one and couldnt remove 2 when I did mine also, too much force will surely snap it off leaving you with having to get new ones.
