White Smoke

I just bought a 90 hatchback with a SR swap, and have been driving it for a couple of days now. It just started to white smoke, but it only white smokes when I shift gears. Its doesn't do it when I'm driving, and it does it at all RPMs whenever I shift. It doesn't matter how fast, or how high of RPM's, it just blows a good 2-5 sec puff of white smoke when I shift gears. Any advice on what might cause this will def help

Could be a headgasket, what is your oil like? Coolant missing? Is there a way you can find out what it smells like?

It could also be oil burning, though that shouldn't be white... in which case it could be turbo seals or oil rings.

Does it also do it when you drop into neutral from gear or revving and letting off in idle?

I thought about a head gasket, turbo seals, and oil rings, but then thought if it was any of those it would be doin it all the time instead of just when I was shifting. Car has about a half of qt of oil too much I think, was wondering if that would do it or not. But didn't think it would. Oil looks pretty good and everything and gonna do a oil change tomorrow with royal purple anyway. What do ya reccoment 10-30 or what?

If it's overfilled it could come through as blowby... possibly explaining the smoke. The on shift thing has me though.

Couldn't white smoke also mean unburnt fuel coming out. Mine did that and i could actually smell the fuel.

so ur saying its getting to much gas, I guess I need to turn it down or turn up the boost? If it was that, that might explain why it was only doin it when I shifted

its probably the open dumped bov, its letting air out inbetween shifts when the afm and ecu still think its going into the motor.

o ok I am taking it to a performace shop in memphis to have them check it out, I checked the BOV and it looks good. So I don't know, then thought it might be a turbo gasket since I'm on the stock T25. But will figure it out in a couple of days

I think it is the unburnt fuel. I have seen a few cases where people ran ssqv uncirculated and it ran fine. But most people recirculate. I also notcied that you had hks ecu. Is that JDM or Usdm that could play a factor.

I experienced a problem almost identical. I had changed my injectors. The fuel was only showing up between shifts because I was off the gas. Anyways one of my o-rings on the injectors was bad and it was dumping fuel. And it really showed up in between shifts.

Yes USDM, meaning did he get it here from hks usa (maybe a hookup) or maybe he got a jdm ecu from ebay that is not tuned for our gas.

I think it might be a blown head gasket, because now when I drive it its smoking more and more. Don't know just more white smoke when shifting than before. Plus was mid revving and standing still and it was smoking then also.
