Wipers

My affliction continues. I can be driving and hit a bump, make a turn or just sneeze and my wipers come on and wont turn off. At first I could just turn the ignition off and they would stop, but now they go off when they feel like it and come on when they want. The intermittent setting on my wipers does not work but the other two speeds do. I searched and didnt find an answer even though quite a few people have this problem. Anyone know what to do?

1) Replace wiper switch.
2) Replace wiper amplifier.
3) Replace wiper motor.

Has to be one of those three parts.

Hmm could you please explain why it could be the motor?

Doubtful that it is, but it's a process of elimination. The switch or the amp are usually the culprit 99% of the time, but to verify for certain you can swap the motor out as a last ditch effort if the other parts don't fix it. After that, it's a harness problem. For S13s you'll be working in the underhood harness, for S14s it's all located in the dash harness. I have replaced one motor in my time of dealing with these cars, so anything is possible.

Man in the dash!! How hard is it to get to the motor in a S14. I guess I should start in my stearing column and check the wiring first then right?

if your cars are lowered and you havent relocated the harnesses inside the fender well, you could have chewed up the wires under there causing this randomness. I've seen it happen too many times.

To check just remove the drivers side wheel and lookup into the well, if you see bare wire...thats it...

Thats the funny thing. Ive chewed through those wires a few times but in those instances never had an issue with my wipers. I relocated it a long long time ago with no issues since. But all of a sudden they start to act up.

Lowered cars won't have that issue on S14s, none of the wiper wiring runs out under the hood through the fenderwells. If it was an ignition related problem with the wiring you'd have other things going out intermittently.

The wiper motor is 4 bolts, very easy, but definitely check the switch and amp first, those are more prone to having issues.

Your rep is worthless. Haha. Anyways, having wiper problems suck, especially when it's raining, and all you can do is put a crap load of rain x, and drive really fast so you can see.

Just an update for anyone with this issue. It was the brown relay hidden inside the fender that was bad (relay or amplifier not sure what its called). Figured it out after I swapped the switch and the motor with my 96. Hope that helps someone.
