Post Sleepy eye stylin!!

Hey, guys...I know this has been done a zillion times, but not everyone who has sleepy's has the whole LIT sleepy eye thing goin :P

So there I was, on the forums dinkin around and came across an actual vid of how to do the 'ol sleepy eye look. And no, its not just cutting the brown wire lol... I'll explain the process here in case anyone is interested or whatever...

Basically, your going to need the following:

4x Long wires (to reach from your interior where you want the switches to the fuse box under the hood)

4x Short wires (About 4 inches or so)

6x Male connectors (Spade type..small enough to fit in the relay's plug contacts)

10x Female spade connectors (Again, small enough to fit on the relay contacts)

2x Toggle Switches

Instructions:

1. Pop the hood and locate your fuse box (left side as your looking at the motor..little black box)

2. Find the headlight relay and remove it, then place it in the extra little holder next to it..that way the relay and the socket are right next to each other.

3. Take 2 of your long wires you have, and crimp on female connectors on both ends.

4. Take the other 2 long wires and put a female on one end and a male on the other end of each

5. On the 4 short wires, connect a female and a male to either end of each wire.

6. Take one of the long wires with 2 female ends on it and run it from pin 1 on the relay to the switch.

7. Do the same for pin 3 on the relay, only run it to the other switch.

8. Take one of the long wires with a male AND a female connector on it, and plug the female onto other post of the first switch, and plug the male end into contact 2 on the relay PLUG.

9 Again, do the same with the other long wire from switch number 2 to relay plug contact number 4.

10 Now, take your short wires and connect contacts 5, 6, 7, and 8 together, respectively from the relay to the relay plug, matching all the numbers.

11. You should have everything setup for operation! Now, to test it...

Test out your headlights first...from you headlight switch on the steering column, turn on your headlights (they should pop up and come on). If they do, good, you've got it right so far!! If they dont, try flipping BOTH switches..you may have connected them backwards...if thats the case, just reverse the wires on the posts on the switch

12. Now, turn BOTH the toggle switches on.

13. Now, if you go back and use your factory headlight control, you should notice that the lights will come on, but they will NOT raise...this is a GOOD thing!!

14. Now, with your lights on, take switch number 2, and flick it on and off..this will cause your headlights to pop up and stop with each "flick"...keep doing this until you have them at the desired angle.

15. Now, if you turn off your lights via the factory headlight control, you'll notice that the only thing that happens is the lights go on and off..no movement...

16. To reset your lights to their original position, turn off the factory light control, and then turn off both switches. The lights should pop up, then go back down to their normal resting position.

Thats it!! Here's the diagram that I got from the vid

Saw this on an Option video I think... want to say it was number 15. Anyhow, I never really got into the whole "lit while sleepy" thing, guess I'm not JDM enough.

What the fuck, diagrams and all this mess.

It's SLEEPY eyes, anyone still do them? I stopped like 2 years ago because it started to feel really stupid. Kinda like the JDM wakaba leaf noob badges.

Anyway, nice writeup, although I have to say it's the 27304 writeup Ive seen on how to do lit/unlit sleepy eys.

Wow, way to bust my balls...just thought I'd throw it out there..no biggie though..haha

Anyway, the vid with the subtitles is here...i just thought it might be easier to follow in a step by step format instead of trying to see what the heck their sayin the first couple times you watch it. *shrug*

OR

Cut the brown wire that comes out the back of the headlight controller. Turn on the lights to make the lights go up, and Tap and headlight button until you get the desired height.

^ That way is 10x easier and literally takes 2 minutes at most.

You don't need to cut the brown wire...Just take it outta the harness that plugs into the headlight switch..why cut it when you don't need to?..works just the same

Ok, sleepy eyes has been argued to allow more air to your intake. Whether it's practical or not, there is at least somewhat of a performance gain.

What is the purpose of having the lights on, when they aren't even pointing in front of you?

Just adding to the discussion.

because it looks cool. i guess. maybe. i dunno. the outlined method allows you to flash your high beams, too. i used yet another method, that involved plugging a switch into the headlight control fuse. lights on, but no high beam flash.

They need light directly infront of their wheels to keep them from curbing their 15x7+40's when they park.

I don't see any other point. It isn't cool. It WAS cool a few years ago. And that was only to one up the nubs who didn't know how to do it.

You can't drive on the street with that setup. Unless you want the cops to pull you over.

But then that'll stem a new, "Cops are pigs" thread.

At least someone wrote up how to do it instead of asking HOW to do it...

I dunno what the point of having the lights on while you have 'em "sleepy" on the road, but I've seen a few drift videos and all be it, pointless, the lights look cool while there on when the car infront of them gets sideways and covers 'em in smoke...

That has to be the dumbest friggin reasoning I have ever heard. If there is enough smoke to get it on front the sleepy eyes, there is enough smoke to get in front of the lights in the proper position. But hey, I guess if the drifters make it cool, then it must be.

Not so much the JDM factor as much as the fact that there were two slits of yellowish light... and thats not really a reason..I was just pointing it out...Personally I rock them cause I'm so damn JDM (...kidding...)..the only time I have 'em sleepy is when I'm working on the motor and have to have them level so I can put my drink/smokes there...lol

Don't have to comment on the other millions of issues with my ghetto car. Pointless driving around at night because a cop will pull you over and you will kill youself because the headlights are pointing straight at the ground in front of you. I never really figured out the wiring but a buddy of mine had watched the same video a long time ago or read it out of a magazine and made themselves a few of them. I think mine is different because where the cruise control button was, it's replaced by a red button that controls the dropping of the headlights. When I want to turn them on I just turn on my headlights normally, and if i want them to pop-up all the way I just press the original headlight controller.

I feel no problem doing it with some time on your hands and it didn't really cost anything or cause any problems. Also took me him about 5 minutes in the parking lot of Tapioca Express. Unique-ish because no one really takes the time I just cuts the brown wire and calls it a day.

Drive around when it's lightly raining or in the day time and people in front of you can see it perfectly, no +10 hp gain or anything. In terms of looks, it's like buying kouki tail lights... without spending the $400... which I did anyways.

Thread resurrect!

One of my motors is slightly faster than the other, resulting in a pretty ghey 'winking' stoned sleepy eye look. Aside from purchasing two brand new motors, is there anyway I can get around this?

Also, to add onto discussion... they use two DPST (double pole single throw) switches in the video, which I did as well. Couldn't you just use one DPDT (or SPDT) switch instead? I assumed they were using two to control each side (zooms in on the video), one switch per side. When I checked the relay, I realized this was physically impossible.

Anyway, using both DPST switches at the same time (simulating a DPDT) worked fine... Using a DPDT would remove one switch, giving a cleaner install.

So yeah, word. 1x DPDT vs. 2x DPST. And... headlight speed. Those are my two questions.

Peace Zilvia

(Edited for clarity of thought process.)

When I did this, I used a single DPDT switch, which ended up looking cleaner where I mounted it.
Then I put a Silvia clip on about 2 weeks later, so I've got a switch on my console that does nothing... but it was cool while it lasted!

I'm with Dousan!

Sleepy eyes will always look cool, no real reason for it... I've just liked them since 1997, and I'm sticking with it. This is from a day ago!

So then it is confirmed that one DPDT switch will function just as well as two DPST switches. Question #1 = PWNT

Now... to stop the winking. I saw in another thread that there is an L bracket by the headlight that you could adjust to stop the winking. I haven't fucked with it, but having pulled the black headlight cover off to look in, everything in my brain tells me that would make the headlights cock-eyed at full extension (up). That is about three times gayer than cocked eyed while 'sleeping.'

Oh and, what are you all doing with the relay after giving it wires? I dunno about you all, but I have a relay in the spot the hella JDM guy uses.

Peace and carrots, Zilvia
