im looking to get around 400 hp inm my car and i was wondering if the ka24de could do it or should i just go with the sr20 and modd that up.. i know you guys are wondering so much but i got a mustang gt always messin with me and one day id like to take him :-p a man can dream
but yeah what would be easier to get to 400 hp with out nos thansk guys phil |

u wouldnt need that much hp to waste a mustang, 300 @ the wheels would do it i say build up that KA

i need some help guys if i build up this ka .. it's pretty much stock i need some info on alot of mods and a place to get them at a good price... im gonna need info on ALOT of mods :-p im goin all out
thansk for your help guys also putting unorthodox pulleys on our cars does it hurt them in any way ? thanx phil |

I dont think it can be done with the KA alone. You would have to build the #### out of it and even then anything over a 50 shot in conjunction with a turbo would blow the KA's sidewalls to peices. You should be able to absolutely kill a mustang GT I would say at around 180-200hp in an s13 if he is unmodified. If you are looking at a turbo kit, that should net you over 300 if properly done and tuned, and you should run with c5 vettes. I love the KA and say build it up.

400 is realistic, with a Turbo and NOS and with a built top end. If you want anything more than 450 then you will have to start building the bottom end too. If your running NOS then consider lots of Drivetrain mods too.
The SR would be a little Ezier to get to these kinds of numbers though. |

I dont think you can do it on the KA. Show me someone who is running over 350hp on a KA engine or show me someone who is running NOS on it. I saw a pic of the sidewalls on the KA engine and there isnt even enough room to bore it out to allow for aftermarket pistons. You would have to be pushing around 17psi on the turbo to make say 350hp to the wheels and to then add a 50 shot of nos on there...your sidewalls would blow everywhere into your cylinders and then probably start shooting pistons everywhere since they would catch the broken walls and shatter your rods. I dont know a whole lot about the KA, but I know about boost, and I think that although the KA engine is very reliable, it isnt made to take that much stress. 350hp on a BUILT KA is #### good, but thats only my opinion. You want 400+hp, use the sr20, its made for that.

Get off the thin sidewalls of the KA, you have no Idea what they are capable of. Ever seen the NA GT3 race car with the KA engine, yes they have 350rwhp on a NA, and yes there bored out too. Not very streetable, but very capable. You main concern with that much power on the KA is the Crank. I am trying to find out if a Chevy Z24 crank would work on a KA. Back to the subject on hand....
If I wanted to run that much power then yes, I would get a SR. But I plan to be at 400rwhp with my Turbo KA, no NOS. So do what you want to do. I will spend more money in the end... |

whaT IS THE DIFFERENCE WITH THE S14 AND THE S15 SR20DET OTHER THAN 29HP CAN THE S14 BE BUILT UP TOO 400 HP W/O NOS 450 - 500 WITH NOS

I think alot of people are missing the point. Just because you can SQUEEZE 400hp out of a motor, that doesnt mean slapping a 100 shot of NOS is going to give you 500. If you are already pushing the limits of a motor and dont have it properly tuned, you are going to grenade your engine from adding No2. The sr20 engines can definately handle that power, but you are most likely going to need a completely built bottom end and some hardcore rods/pistons that are also possible coated on top. The first place I would go if I even planned on having that much HP wa to a dyno with a wideband o2 sensor. Then you can properly tune your car and know how close to the edge your running before you do something that may ruin everything you worked for...

dog, lay off the caps...
there's a KA24DET S14 in houston with 392hp @ 20psi, no NOS, he ran an 11.9 at 120mph 1/4mile. Car is mostly stock except for forged rods and pistons. hey West, how'd they get 350 NA hp? My target is 200-250 NA hp. How'd they do that? |

Pure race motor. Ever seen the "You Win Some" ad with the 240SX and 300ZX. That is that car.
There would be no way to get this out of a KA for the street. 200rwhp is a good goal for the KA, get that much HP on a NA KA engine and you will haul some ass. |

WeST, so your opinion is that if you want to go above 350 you should stick with the sr motor? I would think that the larger displacement ka would be more capable. Past a certain point your going to need forged pistons/rods and a balanced crankshaft on either motor. Is there anyone out there making custom grind cams for the ka? What about the sr?
BTW, there's a guy here in Georgia that was in a past issue of Turbo. He is making about 370rwhp on his turbo ka. I think he is running at 25psi with forged pistons/rods and a balanced stock crank. One thing that I noticed from his dyno is that he is definately pushing the limits of his engine's breathing capabilities. He only makes a about 10 more hp at 25psi than he does at like 18~psi. |

If it were me and I cared about cost, then yes I would be all over the SR. I like the KA only because its got more torque and its not as common to see a properly setup KA. The KA engine is by no means a race engine, its used on Nissan trucks.... You will have to do engine work sooner if you have a KA, the SR is more capable on stock internals.
Serveral people make Cams for the SR and a few make them for the KA, you can have Colt cams or JWT make you some custom cams for your KA. I have never heard of anyone running 25psi on a KA. I could imagine 18 is right for 370rwhp. He could have more if he tuned his car properly. Although with Nissan engines and ECU's, tuning is always a bitch. |

Also, crower makes all custom grinds for all cars and I believe they even have some for the 240 in the catalog, but I could be wrong. IMO the best cams there are. Also, for the guy running 25psi, does anyone know what turbo he was running. Just curious so I could look at some effeciency maps and find out what he should run.

I think he was running 20psi, no nitrous. Just keeping this post updated, cuz he reached his goal of hitting 11's. BTW, this is a street driven car with full interior. I cant wait to get my S14! Ok heres pics of his car. This is before the haltech. It's a t-60-1 ball bearing with 8:1 compression piston, stock head, 720 ccinjectors, jwt fuel rail, 300zx fuel pump, automotive FPR ,haltech DFI ,trust intercooler, ceramic coated exhaust manifold and turbo with Revhard exhaust manifold , The Haletch was installed and tuned at Texas Performance Innovations in Houston. The CR is 8.5:1. The head remains stock and is also using the stock head gasket.. the suspension still needs a lot of work. the car will not transfer weight very well and we cant lay down the power off the line. we still have a lot more left in it and we will continue to progress. Also My KA has been bored .5 over the equivelent of 20 thousanths of an inch, I am hoping for the same numbers as this car because we basically have the same setup, I will have a custom short runner intake manifold and be hitting 25 psi so maybe I can get a little more out of it. I'll keep everyone updated |

You have a very nice 240!!! I stand corrected on the comment that a KA couldnt hit 400hp, Im very very impressed. The haltec is exactly what any turbo ka needs IMO because you need a way to log and control all the aspects that would originally be set through the ecu, mainly though the fuel and timing which would normally be set using an itc/afc, which personally I dont like. For a DSM it runs about 1600-1800 with all the software and parts, Im pretty sure it will be about the same for a 240.

####, I didn't realize that they were that expensive. I was figuring about $1g. What would be a good alternative if you couldn't afford a standalone. Are there any other standalone's that would be cheaper?

You can get a used PMS, but again, I dont know if they work on 240's. That should only run about 900, apex makes one but I think it is pretty expensive, I went ahead and went with a proEFI, which IMO is the best of all of them. It runs about 1600$ too, but it is far worth it when you see what you get for it. A standalone isnt really all that expensive when you add up the alternatives. In order to just do the 3 main things you need to tune a car, being timing, fuel, and boost, just using the apex instruments, the avc-r is 500$, the afc is 300$ and the ITC is 320$. Thats 1120$ right there alone. Add in a datalogger for my car thats another 200$ and the cost is almost the same as the standalone. Piggybacking gives you some control but not enough if you have a turbo KA engine. You need the flexibility to log, tune, and watch everything in your engine/ecu everytime you make a change, and it will be a HUGE safety net because you can see when youve gone too far and dont risk damaging your engine like the other methods.

Hey, just this weekend I met with some other 240 people here in AZ, one of the cars is T.Y. Yap's and it is an S14 running about 320 RWHP on stock internals.

Well I'm going in a similar direction with my car. I've got the KA24E. I'm tearing down the whole motor. Forged rods and pistons, custom ground cam, new crank. Bigger injectors and fuel pump. I found a turbo manifold and intercooler. Still deciding on which turbo to use but am also plannin on some NOS as well. I asked about sleeving the cyclinder but the guys have told me I shouldn't need to.My interior is semi stripped up front and totally stripped from the door jambs back and I'm going to relocate the battery to the back and remove all the AC components. Also going to be running a straight pipe exhaust and already have an adjustable suspension. I'm looking to run at least 10's and possibly dip into the high 9's
