Greeting all! I need your help.

Hi All and greetings.

I’m new on here and I have many questions. But first off, let me start from the beginning.
10 years ago, I wanted to buy a sports car. It was either an FC3S or an S13, nothing else. And one day, after looking for the perfect baby, I found an FC3S 1988 in almost mint stock condition. The guy that owned it was 62 years old. And for the price he was asking, I bought it right away.
Since then I modified the car, year after year until last year when it was time to store it for the winter. I decided to completely overhaul it. I mean from A to Z…And I just finished 2 weeks ago. But now, the problem is….I’M BORED! I need a new project. And an S13 it will be. 10 years ago, I wanted either one, now I want both.

So what I need from you guys are pointers, what to look for and such. So let me describe you with what I want to do and then I’d would like you guys to give me your opinions. I know the 240SX, but not very well. I don’t know the trouble spots either. So any help will be welcome. So here are my Qs:

-I plan on going KA-T, no SR20 for me. And no more than 8 PSI. I estimate that with good supporting mods I should come around 250 rwhp. Right?
-Also, how much does it cost to rebuild a KA?
-Can the KA reliably support 8 PSI with SR20 injectors?
-Does the 300ZX brake swap wothr it cost wise?
-Are the SR20 injectors same impedance as the KA Harness/ECU?
-What trouble spots for rust should I be looking for when buying an S13?
-I think all Canadian S13 came with an LSD…right?
-Am I better off buying it in the US?
-Can the KA tranny support 250rwhp?
-Anything else I should worry about?

Thanks for the help all!

And here is a pics of my baby. I plan to do the same to my next acquisition.

im sure you can make more than that on a ka-t one of my friends are aiming for 300+ hp on his ka-t

to rebuild a ka... i mean u plan on going piston rods the whole 9? it really depends i think it should be around 2 g's if you do the work your self

i think 10 psi will be safe. but u can probly do more depending on turbo size and if u wanna tune or not

300 zx brakes are awsome!!!!!!! go for it!!!!!!!!!

not to sure about that one.... might wanna search that one

under the doors and the hatch tend to be rust magnits

not to sure about that one. if not kaaz 2 way is the best! but expensive

240s ase common here you can get one mint for cheep. i payed 2 grand for mine bone stock! perfect!

im pretty sure it can hold might wanna get a aftermarket clutch tho

NOTHING a 240 is a perfect project car. and now that they are getting more and more popular, its way easy to find parts! have fun man!

ka-t.org for all your turbo questions

-300zx brakes are absolutely worth it. they are cheap too.
-i would assume canadian cars are exposed to bad inclement weather. put it on a lift and check the entire car for bad rust.
-no idea on canadian VLSD. the nissan VLSD isn't quite on par with the LSD that came on some FCs. you will probably want to install a more aggressive differential.
-you might be better off buying it in the US if you buy from a non crappy weather state (florida, cali, etc.)
-yes the ka tranny can easily support 250hp

btw your link requires log in to view. nobody can see that ish.

Ahh hell...it doesn't work....

Anyhow, rx7club is down for the moment, so I'll get pics later.

Thanks for the good response aznpoopy! Anybody has an idea of how much it costs to ship a car 2000 miles?

Ah!! I forgot one other thing. I saw a couple of people with an S13 with the front of an S15. Is that bolt on? Because i'd buy a front clip of an S15 and sell the SR20.

Well, I'm not planning on forging shit and all that. Just a regular KA rebuild just like stock. Just to start off on a practicly new engine. Since all the block and head will be stock, am I safe to assunme that 8 PSI wont be too much with SR20 injectors? And how much for a stock KA rebuild if I do it myself? Who sells rebuild kits aside from the dealer?

Thanks!

Being in the engine rebuild it might be a good idea to get better internals

I know a guy who had a KA-T couple years ago and he bent two rods being at something like 10 psi

For rust: front shock towers, where the upper door hinge is but not on the door, on the car.
on the hatch where the spoiler is / used to be. frame rails

If I were you and had a little more money i would definately go buy one in the US, much better chances to get a good chassis.

See the pic in my sig where the windsheild sits, there was 3 huges holes, like 6 inches long... and the car is rust free (pretty much) from the outside...

If I ever have to do it again, I will go to the US

That chart should give you an idea of what type of injectors you will need. It is at 100% duty cycle. You will want to be at 80% duty cycle so you will need to calculate it yourself. The ka have been known to support 300+ on stock internals. That is only with proper tune with the proper supporting mods. Not a safc either.

Not a SAF? What do you recommend? Standalone such as Microtec, Rtek 1.3 or 2.0?
What turbo do you guys recommend for 250rwhp for a KA? T04? I would think that T-28 is too small and T-60I to big. I also what something that will spool fast....maybe a Hybrid T3-T4?

you will have to make your own decisions based upon the research that you have done. Just dont go rushing into it and do things right the first time instead of doing things twice.

No worries. I'd rather mesure twice and cut once.

I'd love to show you what I did to my FC...but I can only attach images that are less than 25k....wtf

SR injectors are the wrong impedence. CA injectors are correct, and the same flow rate. Check the trunk extensions for rust. And the dyno section on KA-t.org will give you an idea of what turbos put out what hp at what PSI.

Very helpful, Thank you. But one problem...whats a CA? :wallbash:

And I checked KA-T.org. Very interesting.

You really should've searched this... But I'll be nice...

Also your picture link doesn't work being as how I'm not a member which is gay.

-I plan on going KA-T, no SR20 for me. And no more than 8 PSI. I estimate that with good supporting mods I should come around 250 rwhp. Right?
-Also, how much does it cost to rebuild a KA?

-I think all Canadian S13 came with an LSD…right?
-Am I better off buying it in the US?
-Can the KA tranny support 250rwhp?
-Anything else I should worry about?

1 - I have a ka-t myself. As well as a 13bt but that's another subject... Your estimate is pretty close.

2 - For the power you're looking to make you could run stock internals. So expect to spend something in the $700 price range.

3 - I'd suggest running injectors a little bigger than stock sr's.

4 - Just like how it's suggested to switch over from the single pot over to the four pot on FC's the same is suggested on the s-chassis.

5 - You can solder on resisters to change the impedance from high to low. I would suggest getting injectors off of a s4 or s5. Any injectors would work as long as it isn't off of a turbo or a GTU. But you will need a top feed fuel rail.

6 - #1 place you'll find rust is the rear trunk spoiler. Due to the fact that they are foam and water seeps under it fairly easily. Other places would be frame rails and that's about it. Depending on where you pick on up from it shouldn't be much of a problem.

7 - You don't want the diff out of any model even though your will most likely have VLSD . VLSD's fluid breaks down fairly quick and will start acting like an open. Unlike the clutch type that came in s4 tII's. I would suggest purchasing a two way or being cheap and welding an open diff.

8 - No point unless you find one for a good deal. Because you have to deal with customs iirc.

9 - The ka can handle that easily. But just like any car when you start upping the power, I suggest you purchase a clutch that can handle it.

10 - S-chassis' don't handle as nice as FC's =)

11 - A CA18det is the motor that was in the 240sx before the SR.

12 - A t28 should be fine for the hp you are looking for.

13 - Rtek doesn't make engine management for 240's. Too bad though. I'd like to run the 2.0...

Just pointing that out, good info otherwise

As far as trouble spots, definitely check out the front strut towers and frame rails since they have been known to rust pretty bad. Also check/rebuild timing chain before boosting IMO.

I was too lazy to note which year/model it came out with. haha.

Thanks for noting it for me.

Well, I'm not a rotary guy, I'm a car guy...and a logical one at that.

There is now logical reason to put a rotary in an S13 aside from the ''uniqueness'' factor. Also, I already have a rotary, why would I want another one? Thats what an RX7 is ment to be powered with.

I want an S13, a real one. And thats what I wanted it for the last 10 years.

And RX7club is back up, here is the pic, I hope you guys can see it now...

Every plan and question you have has been answerd and been done by someone in this forum.. the search button may help a lot....

also... if your bored.. you being a rotary dude.. and 10yrs of owning an rx7 you must be a mechanic by now.. a crazy swap would be a 13bt 240sx.. havent seen that at all.. then drop the sr into the 7..? dope!
