Rollhard Performance 3" CarSound cat:

Eric

P.S. Remember to buy two 3" flanges and two gaskets for the install, have it welded up at a muffler shop, and then tell me how it is (since I'm going to get one soon).

Is a "gutted" cat an option?

That is such a lame solution. For ~$60 you can have a 3" test pipe from Heavy Throttle if you really don't care about the environment. At least this solution won't cause weird turbulence in the air stream (like a gutted cat will) and it will sound nice.

But personally, for $120 for the CarSound cat and $20 worth of seals and flanges, $10 for bolts and another ~$35 to have it welded up, you can have high flow and decent emissions.

Let's try and at least make an effort for some type of social conscience. It's bad enough that we have no problem turning up the boost and sucking mass amounts of fuel into the engine. But at least the exhaust can get cleaned a bit.

OK?

Good grief! Take a pill. It was merely a simple, low-cost alternative. You preach to me about emissions, yet you have performed(as I ) an SR-swap which is technically not emissions legal in most states, nor do I think you went to all the trouble to ensure that it was.

Meanwhile, a conventional lawn mower or BBQ grill puts out more emissions than two cars combined.

So rather than policing others, practice what you preach...instead of "do as I say, not as I do".

Why don't you just have a muffler shop weld you one for about $20 bucks? You can buy the necessary flanges at Pep Boys.
About the environment - that's just what people say to make you feel bad about not using a cat. What, it's OK for race cars to do it, but not us? Balderdash!!

True that. However, I can tell you right now that my SR with cat is no "smellier" than my KA was. And definitely less smelly than no-cat cars running around town. Oh, and there are no emissions req's in my part of Illinois, so I could ditch the cat with no worries. I just think it's sooo easy to just run one, that it would grate on my conscience if I didn't.

I'm taking a Midol now.

Typically 'Merican response

i.e. "I drive an SUV because I can" "I own a gun because I can" But does that make it right?

Point is, someone has to have a social conscience...obviously you don't. No biggie. But I'm going to try and preach anyway.

As for race cars...they pollute in VERY small percentages...they aren't being driven to soccer practice. And, they operate at high temps (where engines are efficient anyway). That's why street cars need cats. You're not always driving a hot engine.

End.

Eric

one comment in all of this. Everyone who suggests not using a cat to cut down on tailpipe emissions or does just that adds to the problem.
I agree with UIUC . People are always lamenting California smog laws but guess what we have cleaner air because of it. Guess what else a properly tuned SR with a cat will pass tailpipe emissions tests here in California. It just won't pass visual .
So for any of you trying to justify your desire to pollute, with the reasoning that people are running SR's and they pollute because they are not legal , well that is just wrong. Its also a very lame excuse for not wanting to take responsibilty. A very common American trait.
If they do it its ok for me to do. rationalizations at best folks.
that said get a carsound high flow cat they work well and are affordable.

So now I have no social conscience because I don't use a cat on my SR20DET powered 240sx. Makes perfect sense.

I don't use a cat because modern engines (especially high performance, turbo engines) were never meant to work in conjunction with them. They are an effective way to reduce emissions, but they still obstruct exhaust flow, plain and simple.

If you're going to spend the time and money modifying your engine, then you're going to do what's best for it, and that's NOT using a cat.

You mean to tell me that if the California Air Resource Board decides that it won't require cats on cars anymore, you'll still use one just because they're environmentally sound?

Furthermore, my descision not to use a cat on my SR20 isn't the "typical 'merican response', partly because most Americans do not drive SR20 swapped 240's, and partly because I still have the factory on my daily beater, an '89 civic, and wouldn't remove it even if I legally could. I have no reason to.

So turbo motors don't run hot?

haha this is halrious, but who cares if your car can pass emissions or not. Its not going to hurt anything, Green House Effect isn't real buddy. All you liberals care about the trees and squirels more than yourself. Absolutly no trees, or squirels will die if you take off your cat. If i were you I would just go get a test pipe at a muffler shop and get them to put it on. It will give you a good increase in HP too, for sure in a turbo car. The only bad effect will be a bad smell that you won't even be to notice unless you are right at your exhaust. So if I offended anyone sorry, but the enviroment is the least of my concern. Peace.
