They're just dust boots...they don't effect handling. You can get by w/o them, but I'm pretty sure a scratched shaft is a pretty much a shock/strut's death. So that extra protection is a good peace of mind.

I hear KYB GR2's are good. Can't attest for them myself...shock choices seem so limited with the S14's. Maybe Tokikos? I can tell you that tou can get new boots from tirerack for alot cheaper than you can from Nissan, though.

You'll probably be better off talking to someone with an S14, b/c I'm not sure what all is available for them. The KYB GR2's are supposed to be pretty stock feeling if not dirct OE replacements.

Well, I'm going through this right now. I had to wait a week or so to do my suspension because I blew out all my boots. any ding, scratch or dent in a shock/strut will mean you need new ones soon. I got the boots from http://tirerack.com. and I love them, they have a small bump stop on the tops as well. they are 10 bucks a piece compared to the 100 dollars I was quoted by the dealer. (after receiving the dealership parts price not retail!!) as for the shocks I went with the tokico blues. I have the front in already(last night) and the backs will go in tonight or tomorrow!! I got my tokicos for 299.00 for all four!

well, seriously, the tokicos for my s14 ride like stock almost, really nice ride. i'd say it's a half stock, half performance shock.
