Why in the world does my oil lamp turn on when I brake hard?  Is it brake fluid?  Any info would be appreciated.

Check your oil level... chances are you need to add oil NOW.

The oil light is an oil pressure warning light.  When it comes on, it means oil isn't being pumped through the motor, either because there's no oil for the pump to pump, or the pump itself is failing, or the oil passages are blocked.  If it's intermittent (occurs only when braking or turning hard) then it's usually a low oil condition.
