obx vs B&M short shifter

hi,
was wondering who likes their obx shifter, i know B&M is much better quality, but i wouldn't appreciate bothersome rattle in my car. so i was wondering what everyone thinks of their obx shifters, i just want a somewhat shorter shift and somewhat firmer than stock, doesn't have to be supershort or super solid.

Use the search, its been covered countless times, and I do mean countless. B&M only rattles in the high rpm range, and its right at the end of the powerband.

i have the new obx shifter, i think its the worst mod i have added to my car. it rattles in high rpms and it is about the most annoying thing ever especially when you are driving on the interstate.
it was cool for a while because it was easier to catch 2nd and jsut different but i think overall it sucks!!

Just get the Nismo one if you have the money. That sounds like what you want.

EDIT: Jspec has them for $190 right now.

I got my B&M about 2 months ago and I love it. It just has such a solid feel and a dramatically shorter throw. The infamous rattle that everyone talks about is highly overated if you ask me. The only time its an issue is above 5500 RPM under load. Not noticable if you are just cruising. You will not be dissapointed with it.

The Nismo shifter will shorten the throw but not as much at the B&M. I does make the shifting a lot more solid though.

i thought the nismo shifter didn't really shorten much. it was basically a solid replacement for the stock shifter?

Nismo Shifter Replacement
I purcahsed this because I wanted a firmer thow and more accurate shifter over the stock unit. The Nismo piece is quite nice (as expected) but at the same time not flashy. It did shorten the throw but just ever so slightly, but what impressed me was the feel over the actual throw length. Over all I am pleased but if you are looking for a true short shifter then this is not for you if you want a guarenteed quality shifter that feels much more precise with out all of the slop then go with this unit!

wow....seems pretty unanimous that everything thinks the obx shifter sucks. Well, I have one and I don't think it's bad. It's MUCH better than the stock shifter. The rattle is not THAT bad. I mean, it's definitely there...I think the shifts feel much more solid with the OBX shifter in...o well, just my opinion

i'm either really lucky, or way better at installing stuff than you guys, because mine doesn't rattle at all, at least i don't hear it. if you live in a cold climate, don't get the OBX, it ends up grinding 2nd when cold, so you have to double clutch on the upshift of all things until the car warms up. it's a shorter and more solid throw most of the time, but sometimes that 1-2 just sucks ass.

85% of the time it works and has less of a "knife in a bowl of rocks" feel to it. with that said, i'm considering putting my OEM unit back in, but i'll have to buy some random little parts iirc.

(i have the 2nd gen obx btw)

well i have had my obx for like umm.. 9 months now.. i dont know if its first or second generation but i dont have any rattles.. and the only complaint would be the 1-2 shift when its REALLY COLD but is that really the shifter or is it transmission and clutch and all the other stuff? but yea, you can definately tell the difference between stock and obx never tried b&m but for 60$ i am EXTREMELY happy with what i got out of it
just standing up for my parts

i think it's the shifter........SS's have a tendency to mess with synchros iirc........which is why it grinds when you don't double-clutch and revmatch.

I thought it had something to do with that transmission. Isn't that why our cars come with a weighted shiftknob?

i guess its supposed to supress or absorb some of the shock that our transmissions put out when shifting gears. I noticed it a bit once i changed my shift knob. That's when I felt the bad 1-2 gear shift. When I changed to the OBX ss, I felt no difference.

Acts as a vibration dampner of sorts, IIRC.

I've been doing fine with my OBX/ Pilot short shifter.... maybe someday I'll try a B&M and get hooked, but untill then, I'd say the price makes it worth it for the gain of feel over stock.

i agree with tnord. i had the obx shifter on my other 240 and i never had any problems with it. i never heard any rattle or noise. maybe it was just the way u guys installed it. in fact the day i got my shifter installed, i took it to the track and raced with it. worked great!!

My OBX hasn't given me any problems yet, except I had to silicone seal the boot to the spacer because the "wall" of the spacer is too short for the boot to fit securely.

Other than that, everything's fine. And I had raced with it on the track as well.

would anyone that has taken out their OBX/Pilot shifters be interested in selling the spacer that came with them? I need the spacer for my C's, its the same size from what I am told.

B&M fits KA and SR... Steeles has an SR and I'm still KA, we both have the B&M, but his feels a little softer to shift than mine does. Takes nothing from it though, still feels great. I would say that the B&M is the best shifter I have experienced in anything I have driven. The noise isn't an issue, because I don't hear it half the time. The KA isn't really in need of the revs it takes for the B&M to start the rattle, and when it does, music keeps me from hearing it.

I'm gonna have to agree w/ the OBX/Pilot SS supporters. I have one, been on the car for about two years. One of my first upgrades. I couldn't stand the sloppiness of the stock shifter. Well worth the sixty bones I paid. Never had a problem w/ it except occasionally shifting into reverse of first from a stop, I'll have to kinda double clutch to get it into gear. I think that it might be my syncs on my now 200K tranny though.
