grinding only when shifting 4th to 5th

when I shift from 4th to 5th at 3000 rpm or higher i get this grind i feel thru my short shifter. but if im shifting from 4th to 5th at lower rpms i dont get it at all. it only happens from 4th to 5th. my clutch is all the way in and i am shifting the same way i do thru all of the other gears and its always if im at higher rpms. so ive been having to shift early to 5th to avoid this.

does anybody have an experiences similar to this?

if you get the parts any good transmission shop can do it.

getting the parts might be a problem unless they have them in common with a usdm tranny.

get rid of your short shifter...those things are HORRIBLE on your transmission...i had one in my SR tranny for a long time...got to the point where it was grinding EVERY gear...took it out and put my stock shifter back in...all the grinds went away

but its a problem with ur gear sychros...they get old and worn out...outside of rebuilding your tranny...not a whole lot else can be done about it...but get rid of your short shifter before you try ANYTHING else

Old trick to try:

Line up the synchros- throw it 2nd gear at a stop, do it a few times and see if it works for you man

rebuilding the Trans isn't cheap..if you are gonna have a shop do it.
prob gonna charge 300 just for labor(minimum..)
if you get the parts they can rebuild it for you..but you wont be able to order through regular shops..
gl with that man.

its just a gear synchro...its not the end of the world...the transmission isnt going to explode

try switching to a better gear oil (or CHANGE your gear oil if its never been done)...get rid of that disgusting short shift and if it still grinds a bit...oh well...not worth spending 300-400 bux just to fix a slight grind in the tranny

Mine grinds from second to third when beating on the poor old KA, and sometimes second to third. I'm gonna change my gear oil when I change my motor (this weekend hopefully)... Last time I changed gear oil, I wanted to shit my pants it was so poor.... oh and I'm on the stock shifter, in all it's loose, jiggly glory.

Royal Purple or Redline gear oil.

'Nuff said.

I had a grinding issue with my tranny going from 2nd to 3rd anywhere from 3,000 to 5,000 rpms.

Oh, my tranny mount was worn the fuck out too.

Ran royal purple and slapped on a new nismo mount...grinding is gone.

buy a sequential dog box
you will never have trouble getting it into gear again
but first try some good gear oil with shockproof additive in it
like redline hd gear oil

are synthetic tranny additives good on tranny seals? i used redline gl-4 oil but i also mixed in a bit of royal purple additive. grinds like a bitch into 2nd above 3000.

I don't think you need to rebuild the transmission. Afaik, the ka and sr transmissions are the same thing - the only difference being the bellhousing, so you could easily find a ka tranny for cheap and swap it using your bellhousing. Much cheaper than a rebuild.

I had a grind going from 2nd to 3rd since I bought the car last year. I changed the clutch 2 weeks ago and put new diff fluid and it went away. Even with my B&M shifter. Now how do I get rid of that short shifter rattle ?

get a KA trans and swap the bellhousing. gears might be a little different but its cheaper than rebuilding or getting a new SR trans.

You can't... I think you should have the 2nd version which rattles less already... Try not to lightly gas when you are at 1500 rpm or something... Its just your engine shaking, at least that is my experience. Also try a heavier weight shift knob... Might help too...

i used the shit SPL uses, its NEO synthetic gear oil, worked wonders i highly reccomend it, ESPECIALLY if you've never changed the transmission oil. otherwise who cares a lil grind going to 5th isint a big deal, not like this is a new car dude, just drive it and enjoy it till it explodes, then get a new tranny. Their not more than $250 anyway much less than rebuilding yours. plus their all pretty much the same, SR, KA doesnt matter, swap bellhousings and it bolts up. 5th get is a bit longer on KA but not much.

i took my car to a shop and got my transmission oil changed just cus i dont know when the last time the previous owner changed it was. it still does that grind from 4 to 5 but i was wondering... if i try using the royalpurple or the redline oil am i gonna get a difference? the oil that the shop used was some dexton III oil

I have the same problem when I go into second and third.

I swapped tranny's, installed an ACT street disc/pressure plate, filled it with new fluids, bled the shit out of it, adjusted the damn pedal and it still does it when its cold (a lot less than the previous trans though).

wtf lol

Its really frustrating, but I guess there is always a risk when installing another used trans.
