if your looking to pass the visual test, if i were u i would either paint or cover anyting that stands out, like BOV's, cuz some are either purple or Silver or sumthing, just try to make your enigne look like no one has touched it, or mod it, anyhitng that attractes your eyes is a bad in viusal. hope that helps u a bit.

Well one of my friends took his engine (SR blacktop) to one of the Texaco inpection places, and he just told them it was a heavily modded KA, but that it was all legal modifications. They passed him, cause he made sure he had his cat, and his car wasn't too low, and all his lights worked.
The other thing I would suggest is to go right before closing, or when its really busy, so they kinda gloss over everything. I've heard that a $100 does wonders too

even though my county in NC dosent do visual or even sniffer tests in inspections the guy asked me about my engine.

inspector "thats not the original engine is it?"
me "nope"
inspector "bigger?"
me "smaller, went from the 2.4 to a 2.0"
inspector "really? whats it out of, I mean was it sold over here?"
me "yeah its a modified sentra SE-R engine with a turbo kit"
inspector "really? huh... pretty fast?"
me "yeah shes pretty quick still got some work to do on it, I gotta roll you done?"
inspector "cool sorry yeah Im done have a good one"
me "yep"

That sounds like a pretty sweet deal

It would really suck if you had a car enthusiast doin the inspection

it depends, a lot of visual inspection guys don't know what a "ka24de" looks like, but bet your ass they will recognize the turbo.
I'd say your best bet is to tell them up front that its a turbocharged car, but act like its the stock engine.
Most of the people I know that get swaps inspected, like me, "know people."

Well if you live if hick town in Denver, PA if you go to any inspection garage they all think it is just any weak 4- cylinder. All they know is big stupid V8's. They don't know anything about japanese things.

if you did an SR swap that was, for all intents and purposes, stock - meaning you had the OEM intake, exhaust, everything - then i don't think it would be that hard to just play dumb and pretend like it's stock. once you start throwing big intercoolers, BOV's, headers and shiny stuff under the hood is when i think you'll encounter the problem.

the SR20DE idea is also quite nice. they sell CARB legal turbo kits for that, right? if so...they'd have to check the engine stamp to tell the difference.

...thankfully around here, if i do any kind of swap, no one gives a damn

You definately have the sniffer then (i'm in Alamance but work in Guilford howdy neighbor!) , not 100% sure about the visual. but keep the heat sheid over the turbo and tell um its a turbo kit on the stock engine if they ask. find some old hick with a bunch of domestics and such in the lot to do it he wont know what he's looking at... or I may know people

why would you have A HEADER on a turbo car? (just busting your chops man)

I dunno if they have CARB legal kits for the SR20DE or not. but yeah its a car and engine code they would recognize.

man I luv your avatar! thats a classic
