Good Drifting Turbo?
im thinkin bout buyin a 89-90 240 and want to set it up for drifting. anyone know a turbo that has good midrange and topend power. i heard a Tomei Garret b8446 is a good turbo for it. any ideas.
p.s. does it matter if i want a s15 front on it. will that affect turbo choices? |

Wow. That was an AMAZING mix of "knowledge" and "newbie". I haven't seen that before. One minute you're rattling off some turbo I've never heard of, and the next you're asking if turbo choices change if you change the body panels?!
OK, like I said, I have no ideas about that turbo. You just have to find one that is ball-bearing and not too big (unless you run a 2.2l stroker kit and MAD rpms!). You're probably going to be better off with something in the size range of an HKS GT2530 or GT2835. Go read about those... As for the Ichigo face conversion, that has NOTHING to do with turbo fitment. The engine and unibody stay in the same place. The only thing that changes is the shape of the fenders, but that's on the OUTSIDE, which has no effect on the turbo and whatnot. And the hood has the same clearance as before. Eric

GTguy, I say put some of that money into an LSD, suspension, and track time. Whatever you have left, save it for when you crash. At least then you'll be destroying stock body panels instead of a front end conversion.

I'm only gonna comment on one thing......In general if you have to ask what is the best set up for drifting and don't have a good idea already then your prolly not a GREAT drifter yet. This being said I would NOT spend that much $$$ on cosmetic improvements because if you really wanna learn to drift your prolly going to f**k up a few body panels and a bumper or two while practicing. *clink clink*

Forget that. you can drift without a turbo. I mean have you decided what engine wants to be turbo'd, you acnnot choose a good turbo unless you know what motor.
I think it is time we made a forum that has stricktly realinformation as opposed to the 1 newbie every hour asking a question athat is pointless or could be found by searching (soory sick of this). 1. u cant turbo a 89- 90 240sx, its not allowed 2. turbo waste gas and make little if any power 3. get off the 240 bandwagon. =) im sure ill delete this later. |

dude are you talking about the tomei arms kit turbos? those are insane man, if ur new to drifting that is def not the way to go... for your own safety man... like evryone says, practice first... spend that money that you're going to waste on a pretty front end on some usefull things to help you practice drifting... (LSD, suspension, tires, sh!tty rims, and save some dough for when u break stuff). we r looking at cost effectiveness for your level of driving here my friend

finally someone who has heard of the turbo kit! Yea i know that would be a little to big for my experience level. I'm not going to spend my money on cosmetics right away. like Drifties151 said, im gonna spend my money on the important stuff(lsd, tires, suspension ect.)I was tryin to think of the future when im a pretty decent drifter to get the s15 conversion and the tomei garret arms-b8446 turbo. Till then i get to practice drifting into my residental driveway to irritate my gay ass neighbors

one of the best things about buying my s14 was... fantasizing and writing up a list of parts to put on... after using the 'search' copiusly i might add...
never overstated enough... the best upgrade for drifting is driver skill... if you gave me one of koguchi's wonderfully tuned drift 180's i know id wreck it on the first turn... so get yourself a beater, find an lsd, and then practice... please dont practice on your residential street... your going to endanger too many by doing so... find a track to play on... or at the very least a large empty parking lot... you should read that article that was posted a while back about that lady that killed her kids driving her 240 too fast....

just for the record, the tomei kits are $$$$ and upgrading your fuel to maximize performance for those kits are even more $$$$... we all have wishlists though

Meade, the only reason i would drift on my residental street, is because we live on the end of a culdasac and there are hardly any kids out on the street. i would go to a track if there was one around Lawrenceburg, IN. and the big parking lot idea is kinda out of the question because the few store with big lots are open 24/7 and have cars parked all over the place. but yea your right the only way to get good is to practice, practice, practice. plus ill really need practice when i switch over from LHD to RHD.

ok, talking like that man, you're destined to come to one of 2 ends, you'll either A) hit someone when snap-oversteer bends you over and has it's way with you, or B) have a fun run-in with mr. curb and destroy your suspension arms/TC rods/crossmember/sway mounts/etc.
If you have to practice, find some industrial parking lot! They're always empty and devoid of innocents after dark (almost). You'll never have real control of your car without 3 things: 1) suspension, this includes EVERYTHING, sways, coils, lots of urethane, proper-dial in, etc etc etc 2) LSD, read up on this, there have been about 20 threads on LSDs recently, this is a requirement 3) Skill and practice. u don't get one without the other. NEVER residential
not only is it more dangerous, but also very rude to neighbors and families in the area expect large tickets and heavy fines, if not car impoundment. never residential!! |
