Tranny rebuild?
This seems like a bit of a grey area to me. I ask around and 9 times out of 10 im directed to "some guy" who can do it at his house in which I say no thanks. Should I stop worrying and just sent it to a local transmission shop? Its a KA tranny if it matters.

small things like syncros at a tranny shop is like 100 bones (incl parts and labor). least thats what it cost me. pulled the tranny out myself and gave it too em. charged me 40 to crack it open. the 40 went into the 100 to replace the syncros and other bearings.
if ur talking replacing the actual gears and shafts... shit, go all out and get the damn OS GIken close gear set. ![]() |

A full rebuild ranges from $650-950, but parts are only about $350 total. You can find a good working transmission for $100-200. It's really a toss up to rebuild it when you can replace a lot cheaper. The actual labor to rebuild with an FSM in hand is actually pretty easy though if you're inclined to do it yourself.

Buying OS Giken gears would be bad ass lol but im broke *knock on wood*. My car is currently auto so I would be sourcing a tranny and all the necessities to go manual. That said, I figured I could get a known working tranny rather easily but what if that is shortlived? I think id be happier with a tranny that is fully rebuild and will last years then a tranny that may last that long. Also I dont have a garage to be pulling my tranny out so Im wanting to avoid this moreso.
That said, how diffuclt would you say rebuild a tranny is? My knowledge is not of the average person here I'd say. The most ive done was a tune up(belts, fluids, t-stat bla bla) and alternator R&R . |

if you can get precision tools like a good micrometer, dial indicator, etc. it's easy to do.
people are just iffy about doing it cuz the idea of a tranny scares them |

If I had a spare tranny(which I may buy), I'd rebuild it just to go along with the KA I'll be rebuilding this year.
It's one of those piece of mind type of deals for me. I would rather have both new instead of one with zero miles and the other with over 150k miles. |
