my rb20 knockin wtf????

alright so my motor just started knocking about an hour ago i came out of the freeway and started to hear a wierd noise the noise became louder

im thinking i might of spun a bearing or something but then again something else even more weird was happenning, ide press the clutch and it made a loud winding noise like if the throwout bearing wants to get stuck once i take my foot off the clutch the winding noise goes way

i got home and checked it out and i still hear the knocking noise with the motor idling

can the knocking noise be my throwout bearing i searched around but all i found was one person on nico who said it was their throwout bearing i know most likely its going to be my motor

if this is my motor is it worth fixing or should i get another motor
and if i can fix it whats a good place to get parts from my motor is the silvertop rb20det

thanks in advance i just got this car about 2 weeks ago and now this!!

im pretty new with rbs so any help will be appreciated

time for an overhaul .. i would keep it and build from the ground up since you need to tear it down, expensive (not to bad for the DIY types) but worth it, ill be doing my rb26 soon.

How high do you rev it? did you alter the factory rom and raise the limiter? If you don't feel like building the motor and you need your car now just get another RB20 short block. If your going to build it then Spooling sells forged rods for the RB20.

You must have abused the shit out of that motor, RB20s are tough to break. Do you have oil in it? What kind of oil? Do you change it regularly? How high are you revving it?

this is my only car which sucks so i cant rebuild it so right now im leaning more towards getting another block and just swich over the parts and have this other block to build later

well i just got the car about two weeks ago and it was running fine i even checked to see if the oil was bad but it looked new and since i just got it i didnt step on it too much and the times i did i made sure i kept the rpms below 7

also i know this is a stupid question but is there a slight chance that i can take the oil pan off and replace the rod main bearings if thats whats damaged and hope it will fix the problem atleast untill i have enough money to buy another one??

It's very possible as long as it hasn't jacked up the crank. I'd stop driving it IMMEDIATELY to avoid hurting it worse.

totally agree! sometimes the crank just needs a polish which is cheap. dont run the car any more. if it's a deep knock it's your main bearings..higher pitched knock then rod bearings.

Technically you could pull the crank and have it checked and polished and just replace the crank and bearings... but why stop there..... It would be PITA to only do a half assed job

Thumbs up

thanks guys this is good news for me
damn thats good to know, i just hope i can do this i havent drove my car since this happened at all i havent even turned it on anymore.

right now im really hoping i can do this, I really wouldnt like to make this half ass either shit if i could ide just pull the whole thing out and build me a monster but i really got no choice right now cus its my only car and i got no job, so hopefully i can get this fixed quick then find my self a daily beater car

what type of damage should i look for once i open up the bottom end, ive been searching around and i found that by wiggling each rod if thats the problem u can usually find out which one is the damaged one true?

im almost sure its going to be my main bearings cus it is a deep knock

Does it still change whether you are neutral or gear? Whether the clutch is in or out?

Cause That was the initial problem. The TOB could have grenade'd and taken the diaphragm fingers with it.

So if its not in gear you dont hear it?

Normally a spun rod bearing will be faint at idle and knocking will get louder/faster through the RPM's

just pull your motor, pull your tranny put it on a engine stand, pull the oil pan, check which rod it is if it is a spun bearing, unbolt the bottom of the rod casing, and check the journal for any scoring, anything unusual, just compare the one with the spun bearing to one without a spun bareing. if its scored or any big noticible difference take your crank out and bring it to a machine shop and explain what happened and what you need to be done.. and who ever said shoulda gotten a RB25 STFU. RB20's are good motors, there fun as hell.. and can take one hell of a beating. my .02 is this isnt your fault. its the person who had the car before you, didnt tell you to change oil or how long its been in there.. call him and ask when he got his oil changed.

the whinding noise is what i hear when i press the clutch as soon as i let off it goes away, but the knocking is there at idle and becomes louder as i speed up

im gonna try to take a look at it today if i have time. im gonna pulll the oil pan out and see whats going on and go from there...

Maybe you have an oil restriction somewhere? Are you sure its an internal knock? what kind of mounts do you have? I would start from the basics on everything, Go through every bolt on the car and recheck the torque. Check and see if the engine isnt vibrating against something that may resonate like an internal knock.

Then check your oil, filter...drain the oil on a super long plastic container (storage containers at target) to see if there is any shavings, Id suggest in a Magnetic drain plug. Check compression, leakdown, pressure test the radiator etc, check timing. Maybe try a clean/rinse cycle with a bottle of AutoRX to see if compression changes.

no im pretty sure it is an internal knock i checked to see if it was anything small like that but nothing plus the car was running fine with no noises at all. i have the r32 crossmember on it the motor doesnt even move enough to be bangin on something.

thanx for the advice man im gonna re check evrything just to make sure
