Timing chain links wont line up, turned 20 + times

I am trying to set the CAS. My engine would run before but the timing was way off, and it could not be set right. I looked and the CAS was a notch or two off. On a side note, I am replacing my valve cover gasket because there was oil in the spark plug well. I took off cover and I couldnt believe it, THERE Where NO spark plug well gaskets !

Is it possible this motor has had some internal work?

The links on the chain are not even close enough to both set on the punch marks, they are two far apart ( 2 out of the three). I can get either the right one or the left one. Ive turned it so many times I have seen the pattern so I know Ive tried every possible combination...... I am trying to set the CAS. My engine would run before but the timing was way off, and it could not be set right. I looked and the CAS was a notch or two off.

I was told during shipment they might have broke CAS and just slap another one in there with out lining it up. Makes me wonder, cause this s14 sr pulls like a mofo under 4500RPMS, and I thought stock boost doesnt spool until higher RPMS

been there, done that. Followed it to the T. i saw that it would never line up. I think there has been internal upgrades on it, and when they reinstalled the chain they did it right, just not link wise..

Don't know for sure, but if the head or block were ever milled, it could cause that kind of mis-alignment....

Milling .005" off the head will not do s h i t to the timing chain link location. It might call for adjustable cam gears, but that's it.

As for your engine pulling well below 4500 rpm...that's totally normal. The T25 (T28BB in your case) spools at aroun 2700-2900 rpm. It's supercool like that.

Great. Glad to see there are people on this board who are absolutely assured of the fact that they know everything and don't mind sharing it at any chance they get. I didn't see you offering any suggestions to help the guy find a fix to his problem....

Let's see - missing plug seals, CAS was off, timing chain won't line up, timing can't be set right... That says to me the head has probably been off the motor - if the head gasket blew and warped the head a bit, who knows how much they shaved off to make it work? And if you are trying to set the cam sprockets to the factory marks, and the head has been milled more than a little bit, the timing marks will NEVER line up exactly when you put the chain on... It will be close enough to work OK, but one cam or the other won't EVER line up perfectly with the marks.

...and yes, adjustable cam sprockets would fix that, and I think they should fix this motor's problem. But if the marks aren't off too far, and you're not going to turn the boost up so far that EXACT timing is necessary, I wouldn't worry about it....

I feel like a dork, I waas trying to use a advanced timing gun, and it was giving me an error readout... Went out and got a basic one. Also my BOV wasnt leaking bigtime... when i pulled the vacuum line off of it and plugged it, the engine steady out about 90 %!

I was then able to set the timing exactly on the mark... the sprockets lined up fine, and CAS installed good. Thanks for all your help, just wanted to update

Cool. I'll personally take being a dork any day over having to fix/buy expensive parts. Being a dork is free, and I'm so used to it, it's not even embarassing to me anymore...

Damn, I got the timing right, but the CAS was tweak all the way counterclockwise to get it.

Maybe im not getting the right signal - Im using the loop behind engine...

Tried everything and the timing wont line up with the CAS in the middle

WOuld Plug GAP effect timing it? cause since I fouled my last ones and have cheap denso in there...

I picked up some 300ZX TT ones (90-96) and Im going to put those @ .04 gap and try it again..
