coilover preload changed on its own?

recently my front left coilover has been clunking when i turn, so i put the car up on a jack to look at it. i noticed that the front left coilover spring has a lot more preload than the front right. less than a year ago im SURE that the preloads were even on both sides. on the front left i can fit 3 fingertips in the area where u can touch the thread of the coilover. on the front right i can only fit 2 fingertips

has this happened to anyone else that has owned coilovers?

heres a picture. the section i highlighted in red is where im talking about how many fingers i can fit in

I think my front left has done this too.. not nearly as much.. but enough to make the spring slightly loose.. how it happened i have no idea.

damn, guess i better go tighten mine then.

i get the same thing when i turn my steering wheel.

just make sure the locks fit snug under the coil. use some man muscle and make it tight. and lock it tight

spl parts has a special thrust bearing that should solve that problem. it allows the spring to freely rotate separate of the adjuster to that it doesn't have this issue. you have to take apart the entire coilover to install but it could be worth it.

at the bottom of this page.

somethings not tight enough so every time you turn it loosens and increases the height of the shock

would a bad camber plate happen to cause this to happen to one side and not the other? I bought the coilovers as a set of 4 so they must have came from the same batch if it is the camber plate issue
