Tossed up...Redtop s13 or blacktop s14???

Hey guys,

This is the first time i post on this forum so i will introduce myself. My name's Emad and i have a 95 s14. i have done almost everything to it cosmetically: C-west body kit, bomex wing, eastbear grill, volk GTP's 18x9 18x8, eibach sportline, koni yellows, Stillen FSB. I am confused about which SR to get. I know the differences b/w both SR's. Advantage of the blacktop s14 is ball bearing turbo, 15hp more, variable valve timing, and i believe low port intake. Now, some people have told me that the redtop s13 has a stronger intake manifold. Is this true? I know there will be some modification to the motor mounts and wiring but that is fine with me. Its just that theres a big difference in price b/w both of them. I heard from two sources that performing mods on the s14 blacktop loses the variable valve timing. Is this true? If so, in what scenarios. I need some input cause i'm confused. i want to do the swap but i sont want to get either engine than regret i shouldnt gotten the other later on. All input is appreciated.

Emad

Stronger intake manifold?? What the hell difference does it make? What kind of forces are put on the intake mani to need a stronger one? It just sits there and directs air into the cylinders. whoever told you that is a tool. There are no mods that i am aware of that eliminate the VTC in S14 SR's besides removing the mechanism itself (spring).

personally, the S14 SR is a much better engine than the S13 SR's because of the VTC. It rocks my sox!

no question...S14 SR...it's not more desireable and more expensive for no reason....it's a much better engine and platform from which to build...the torque curve made possible by the VTC is worth it alone..

hmmmm

But isn't the torque curve also dependent on the turbo? S14 turbos are t28 vs. redtops are t25. Here's my suggestion to you, what is your hp goal? if you plan to upgrade turbos later anyways, go with s13 because it's less expensive. Also, if you plan to upgrade cams, then s13 is better because s14 SRs wont' retain VTC after cam switched. So basically it all depends, you can't really say one is better, beecause it's all about your budget and future goals. Hope it helps.

that is a good point...it depends on what you want to build or where you want to go with it...

i guess i was just thinking s13 v. s14 out of the box....stock turbo v. stock turbo..upgraded basic bolt-ons only...
