Opinion on repeated posts
Hey guys what do you all think when ppl post questions that we constantly hear all the time?..i was just bringing this up because i recently read something yoshi wrote and i totally agree with him so i was just wondering what the mods are required to do? im not saying you guys arent doin your job but what are your responsabilities(sp)? here are yoshi's words
"the only way things like this will get solved w/o someone's feelings getting hurt is if a mod sez, "please use the search tool" and closes the thread. There will ALWAYS be people asking things that have been beating to death, just as there will always be people who will flame them for doing so. It's just reality." honestly i just read a few threads that seemed could have been solved easily with the search tool or even just searching yahoo...for example "where do i find a nismo cap" im not trying to insult anyone i was just trying to bring up a discussion because i would like to see less of these posts. o and here is 2 seconds of searching yahoo http://search.yahoo.com/search?p=nis...TF-8&fr=fp-top sorry if ppl think this is a pointless thread feel free to delete it |

I've been using forums for various things for years now and I can say this is pretty much an insolvable problem.
Some folks will never search, and won't care about the flak they catch. Other people don't search because they are new and/or don't know how, when those folks catch flak then it can have a positive results depending on how they are told to search. I'm a firm believer in tellin folks to search for things that I know are available, though I think flaming them is uncalled for. I think a powerful archive/faq similar to the one available at 240sx.org could alleviate some of the repetitive topics we see but that would take a lot of work. Realisticly though, repetitive posts are inevitable.

New information comes to light from time to time as does better (or worse) writing styles and clarity. For this reason, I see no reason to consider archived information the "final word".

my opinion - people come up with questions new to them every hour, usually questions that many others have wondered about before; however, there are people that have never heard these question that know the answer. so they can answer them, also, there may be someone that has heard and answered the question and knows more than they did before and can shed more light. i wish everyone wouldn't be so anal about questions that have been asked before.

I like the slashdot.org aproach to commennts and I've always thought it could be applied to user forums in general baring the obvious code rewrite.
The basic premise of the system is that everyone who uses the system enough can vote on the relevance of a comment and a general reason of the score. ie. 5 - insightful, 1 - flamebait. If you could tailor that type of system to a user forum so that the users of the forum could mod the posts themselves you would be able to depreciate the worthless RTFM questions while keeping the questions that always seem to generate a lot of discussion but are always relavent available. User based moderation would also keep interesting threads from dropping pages behind dumb threads. Just a thought ~ jon |

I feel that is a shade "set in stone" and you may have 100 people looking that do not post at all and 2 people grading. Some of the best info on this and other boards are the posts that are like 4 to a thread in archives.
Example: Q? I need to know this Answer: I did this and it works. Answer 2. Look at this thread! www.xxxxxxxxxxxxyyz.org (fake for drama) Answer 3, Cool!! I did this as well! 4. Thanks, it is all now good! ALL post are relevent unless someone has hatred or just bully pulpet snizzel going on. Those are the ones that need erasing IMHO. |

I don't think it will ever change. We have transients (no offense transient) who post stupid questions, find/don't find what they want, and never come back. Or they just browse which is cool.
The only thing would be some sort of a filter for key phrases. Kind of how they have for the bad language. It would just blank out what they said or just close the thread automatically. |

i give you couple reasons why we need noob posts:
a) gives some of us opportunity to b!tch. you just gotta have that. b) eventually well run out of topics to talk about (hypothetically) so bringing old questions up with give BIRTH to new answers and so on and so forth, THuS completing the circle. now think about those 2 really hard. ![]()

this topic has been discussed previously...
http://www.zilvia.net/f/showthread.p...t=repeat+posts so uhh... should i close it?? ![]() We've highlighted the SEARCH button, placed Rules and Guidelines on the top of the forums, and constantly scold newbies for asking questions that could've been answered by searching... so we do what we can, but it seems repeat questions are an unstoppable force. My gripe with closing the thread is: sometimes someone asks a repeat question, but a newer answer pops up because of it. It's with the hope that such an answer comes that I try to not close threads unless completely necessary. But, I also haven't been on the forums as much as I'd like to be lately. Hopefully I'll be able to get online more as my fall semester settles in (still catching up with a few classes I had to swap around). -PJ

I think reorganizing/regrouping (create subsections like the review section) the archive/faq section here will cut down noob questions by some amount;
or into something similar to what 240sx.org faq as one of the main menu (along with review/install/group buy/link..) as mentioned.. (main difference is the use of Zilvia's knowledge base/threads with updated info and sections especially in regards to the usual sr/lsd/5lug/insert popular topic/... type of q's) I think it's visually easier to look for certain things when it is grouped as opposed to a 'search' with a whole bunch of threads that may come up that has nothing to do with the search subject. I like the review section as well, but not sure if noobs know about it when they ask for opinions about product xyz before asking / same with the install section (wish it was more updated, or add links to the threads that have good detailed installs, or provide info from various people's websites with their permission - there are quite a few websites with good detailed install info) Just my 2 cents... |

james is right about the honda stuff.
well wat i suggest is. ive been on other forums and this one forum stands out from the rest. why? because once you sign up and have the newbie status with 0 post count. and once you click the "post thread" and it sends u to the post box where im typing now. instead of seeing a blank box there is a message for you. it tells u about reading the articles and searching for answers. once u click the box. the message is gone. with this the message is already givin to newbies to search even before they post! so thats wat i suggest. to send them a message before they post. yes the forum still gets repeated threads...but very rarely do i see them |

i like seeing questions being asked repeatedly throughout the forum, its cool. it should make the person asking the questions feel very good because he is putting as little amount of effort as possible, shows that the community is strong and willing to answer questions as much as possible. plus, you know you are always getting the newest information.. because vehicle dynamics change very quick, too often for old answers.
this is why we go with kouri tail ights and neon, simplify lifestyle and pleasure. look at the pleasure on this guys face: ![]() he has neon - he has rims - he has happy zilvia is a safe haven for everyone to enjoy, lets do the dance of joy and celebrate. |

without your fine post, I would not have been able to contribute that fine picture you see up above, of that race car with the happy race driver. dont live life with regrets brother, this is the 240sx community.. we are all friends here. lets cherish this thread and embrace the picture of that crazy green car. |

![]() This is most confusing. You suppose he put them on before cleaning off the mud? Could be...Could very well be.. All else fails, at least lets pose on the mudflaps and clean behind their ears each time you go cruising.. Agreed? |
