Sending aid to Haiti?
I'm curious to know what everyone's opinions are about sending financial aid to Haiti?
Should we send $100million+ to a corrupt government even though many say the USA dosen't have the money to do so. The US budget is stretched far enough as it is. Should we even question send the money to Haiti. It is to help ease human suffering. If the USA is the king of the hill, shouldn't we hold ourselfs to a level of responsibility and help, knowing that we will never see anything in return? Your thoughts? |

It's a hard call imo.
You're going to have to deal with huge refugee problem if nothing effective is done. Now if it were some other nation far away from the US, I'd probably be a bit less inclined to give our money away. With the giving out $$$, I think it's best we provide the aid directly to the ppl or work with the gov't. I don't think we should just mail them a cheque and be done with it. I seriously don't think the US gov't intervenes with anything unless our gov't and/or corporate interests are at stake. We don't give money and/or send our military out to every global complication. |

my personal opinion is survival of the fittest, if you can not deal with a 7.0 earth quake on your own then tough cookies to you, but then again if I was president the US would be bombed every other day due to me being a close fisted tightwad and only spending money on US problems.
Now if Doctors Without Borders wants to run on over and help, have at it, helping other countries citizens during a disaster is more or less what they are there for anyway, and seeing as they are already receiving grants and other types of funds there is no money lost on our side of the pond so to speak. |

We don't give countries blank checks. We tend to air drop food and medical supplies or send emergency generators, things like that. Some money is given but it's given like a grant(for a specific propose).

When four people get killed, send an airdrop.
Care package on the way.

Why should the US give money to Haiti?
Because the US FUCKED HAITI OVER LIKE A DIRTY WHORE. Damn, WTF question is that? Go read up on the the history of the US and Haiti and how the US took advantage of them, much like it has almost every developing country in the Americas. That's why they're donating $100 million. They know whats up. For fuck's sake, Haiti is the poorest nation in the western hemisphere. Like Africa poor. Shits disgusting.

at first i was like that too, why help them when our own nation needs help ourselves. But if this will help their country develop/improve themselves to a state that was better than b4 the incident, then im all for it.
this may be a graphic pic. you been warned http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/ABP...010798366.html Pretty sad though, no country deserves that.

Its pretty sad, also hurt to see people go thru hardship like that. Yes when we had our natural disasters,Noone came to help us with a hand but ourselfs. but no matter how you look at it USA is the king of the hill even tho we might be going thru a recession but in countries like haiti, dominican rep, cuba, many countries in central and south american mainy 3rd world countries they live there whole lifes in a recession but worst.things arent going to change for the better that what it is now.
But as the bigger & richer country we should send some help, supplies, needs that some of these people need recover. Haiti is pretty poor country like dominican rep really bad water shortage and electrical black out at random for hours and days at a time in some part( im dominican and i been to DR ) its seriously like that. Im sure its no better in haiti.

What are you people talking about, nations from all over the world offered to help out after Katrina.
And plenty of countries offered to send organizations and military units to assist. I guess America is just too proud or too paranoid to acknowledge something like that too publicly. |

Uh...a lot of people here have selective memories.
There were tons of countries that were offering assistance to the US after Katrina struck New Orleans. International response to Hurricane Katrina - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia For what it's worth, I'm all for giving aid to the people in Haiti, for the simple fact that I think it's fucked up not to help people in need. Especially after suffering the massive amount of damage that Haiti has. But hey, I'm sure being a hard-ass on zilvia, talking about survival of the fittest is cool, too. |

Add to that, that Haiti's infrastructure is seriously lacking in the aspects of health care and emergency reponse - well, you have a recipe for disaster. |

It's not like US is the only nation that 'cares.' If they don't help, there will still be other nations who will. However, it's a polite gesture to offer assistance if there is means to do so. It doesn't even have to be a hundred million dollars, since that seems too generous to people, but anything would be nicer than nothing. |

Hello,
My parents and a majority of family were born in Haiti. Some of my family still lives there. We are praying to hear from them soon. The earthquake has deeply affected me, not only because of my direct connection to Haiti, but because of the huge loss of life and suffrage. Please donate to the Haiti Earthquake Relief Fund by texting “YELE” to “501501” from your cell phone. You will be charged $5 on your bill and 100% of your donation will go to those in need in Haiti. Yele is a charity founded by Wyclef Jean. Please visit Yele Haiti - UPDATES for more information. You can also text “HAITI” to “90999” and a donation of $10 will be given automatically to the Red Cross to help with relief efforts and charged to your cell phone bill. Please visit American Red Cross for more information There are other safe ways to donate. Please visit Impact Your World - Special Reports from CNN.com for a list of charities. I have sent this message to everyone in my contacts, please take time to send this to everyone in your contacts. Send it as a text message to everyone in your cell phone as well. Any donation is appreciated. Please keep the people in Haiti in your thoughts and prayers. Thank you & God Bless!!! |

$100 million goes a long way for that country.
I'm all for helping out Haiti, I have a few friends that are from there and they are devastated.

Huh...I didn't expect some of the posts from a lot of you guys. Anyways, these people don't even have enough money to afford infrastructure for clean, running water.
It's easy to pass judgment from a first-world country when you've never had to worry about the basic essentials of life. I'm sure they'll take critiques of buildings standards under consideration, though. |

I'm all for send aid and cash. These ppl who are not in support of it must be some of the coldest bastards on Earth. Fuck whatever their govt is on.... These ppl need help! Are you seeing these conditions down there?! I mean, what if that was you in that situation?
Being a benevolent humanitarian society is precisely what the U.S. needs to be doing more of. The reason people can question whether or not we should send aid because of our battered economy is due to the money wasted over the past 8 years warring! We'd have a surplus of cash right now if we didn't go into Iraq at all and if we handled Afganistan correctly the first time around. As an added bonus, it increases our perception of goodwill abroad, meaning less ppl will hate us hopefully. Now that times are tight, ppl think it's ok to turn a blind eye and let others die in the street. Certainly, we can't help the entire world. But where ever you can positively affect your circle of influence, DO IT. |
