Strange metal on metal noise comming from my transmission? Please help diagnose

You know the sound when you have completely worn down you brake pads and it is metal on metal grinding noise? Well a similar sound to that is comming from my transmission.

It only happens in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd gear when i am letting the engine brake the car. If i am accelerating or going at a constat rate of speed everything sounds fine, but once i have to get off the gas and it is still in gear this awfull sound appears. I am going to guess that it is my synchros but i have no idea reall and it just all of a sudden happened and i don't know what caused it.

When i was at about 110K miles i decided to change the tranny fluid, and once I did I could no longer shift into second without grinding the synchros. So I have rev match my engine to tranny to get in gear from first to second without grinding. Maybe changing the tranny fluid was the cause of this but the terrible noise from the tranny didn't start until about 20K miles later!

So what do you think?

I had a half grinding half rattling noise under the same conditions as you. it turned out my clutch was making a lot of noise on decceleration. The clutch springs were rattling around. I know this, because when the clutch failed and the springs fell out, it stopped making that noise.

i think if you're really having that many problems with the tranny, you should source out another used ka24de tranny for hundred bucks or so and put it in. then rebuild your old one over time.
