1jz legal?

i was wondering if a completely stock 1jz would be legal to swap in my s13 to DD. i've heard that if the engine is newer and has all the smog essentials to pass emissions its okay. i just want to verify.

sorry im noob and dont know the law system

much appreciated

It wasn't an option in US, it will never be CA legal.

Also, search option is there, I suggest you use it. There's tons of threads on what's legal and what's not.

Why not just buy an old pre-1975 vehicle and swap in a 1jz? It'll be expensive, but you could get away with it, since pre-1975 california vehicles do not require smog.

That is false. you can have any kind of engine in the car as long as engine
meets Smog regulations.. Also you have to have all kinds of junk to meet that regulation. For an example Panda Garage in SD has 7M-GTE
powered AE86

This is false too. having older than 1975 is good. because it is smog exception. but that does not mean you can have whatever you want in the car. According to CA Highway patrol Dept.
I think they said your car has to be less louder than certain Decibel.
and some other .....

Why dont you just call Smog referee and find out your self..
you will get exact answer you want..

CA sucks...

Allow me to help you guys out here.

I recently visited a smog referee at Skyline College and inquired about engine swaps.

The smog referee stated that for an engine swap to be a California certified legal swap, the swap must adhere to certain criteria:

1) The engine has to be newer than the chassis.
2) He will inspect the engine bay to see that everything under the hood is factory to include all smog-related equipment down to the main cat(s).
3) It must use the new engine's gas tank and fuel pump.
4) The engine's ecu must not register any codes.
5) Catback does not matter so long as CA automotive noise levels are not exceeded.

Post count means nothing.

I guess the road Skyline up here in Norcal where cars do runs is meant for only Skylines? I don't think so.

Call them:
Skyline College, 3300 College Dr, San Bruno, CA 94066
Skyline Automotive Department: (650) 738-4410

Not everything named "Skyline" is related to the car itself.

I have never heard anything about the fuel tank and pump before and I have talked to many referee's.

Everything else you have mentioned is on the money.

Oh and I will state this, Each referee at the different stations literally interprets the letter of the law differently.
For instance if you went over to LA Trade Tech the ref over there would tell you that swapping anything engine wise is illegal.
They can and quite often are assholes.

I know of another guy(story related by a friend) who did a engine swap in a Jeep. Which is actually quite common with jeeps and he had one vacuum hose missing and the tech out in Simi Valley sent him home and would not pass him.

Oh and Lou yes you are all wet on the Skyline College thing. It is a College and it does exist its on Skyline Boulevard in the bay area. Hence the name.

Skyline boulevard ah brings back memories of Z cars at high speeds.
