Alright, so ive been helping my friend work on his skyline gtr. It continually bursts coolant lines. We have pulled the starter 3 times to replace hoses within the last 2 weeks.

Alright what happens. So after we fix the hoses we fill the car with water, get air out, let the car get to Operating temp, then put the rad cap on. It seems when we put the rad cap on the problems begins. Once the rad cap is on the hoses start to leak, then some burst. I realized the hoses are old and need to be replaced, but all at the same time? Even some of the new ones have been leaking.

My thought. Im thinking the compression of the cylinders is going into the coolant system due to the headgasket leaking.... Is this possible? The built up pressure with the radcap on causes the coolant hoses to burst?

Any other help is much appreciated, this is so annoying.

yes if the head gasket is blown then it could allow combustion gases to enter the cooling system over pressurizing it try a new rad cap first, unless you know the HG is blown then go ahead and replace the HG

check compression see if there is even any gas pressure being lost somewere. Then you need to check the thermostat to make sure its not stuck shut causing pressure to build, then you need to replace all the hoses.

We are not 100% sure that the hg is gone. But it seems that way. Coolant is boiling in the res, white smoke at times, constant loss of coolant.

If the thermostat is stuck closed, that would mean that the coolant isn't flowing through the head then right? Because his engine seems to get really hot when just idling for a few mins....

Ya if the thermo is stuck shut then coolant is not flowing and that water pump is going to start building pressure, seen it happen to a motorhome at work.
But if there is a constant loss of coolant and white smoke sometimes it sure sounds like a HG

Yah, Ill have to do a compression to find out for sure. We are going to take a look at the thermo, maybe even order a new one, wouldnt hurt.

No problem this is what i do at work when its slow hahaha. I work in a roadside assistance department helping our customer over the phone for a motorhome rental company and when its slow i just sit on my computer usually on zilvia and help people trouble shoot their 240's instead of motorhomes lol.

There is a tester that tests the coolant for exhaust gases and uses a dye that changes colors if it comes into contact with exhaust gases. This method is like 99.999% accurate to finding a head gasket leaks, you should look into getting one from the Mac, Matco, Snap-on etc.
