z33/y33 drilling spindle to 14mm question

i am installing y33 brakes on my s13

for those of you who have done this, what kind of drill bit is needed to drill through and widen cast iron?

i purchased a 9/16-14mm steel bit but it barely made it 1/4 of the way through.

i have read online you need a carbide bit but i am unsure and some input from those who have done this would be helpful.

I've done this a few times, all you need is a 9/16" HSS bit (High Speed Steel) bit and some cutting oil of some sort for lubrication.

ok so i found this Silver/Deming Drill, 9/16, HSS, 118 Deg - Reduced Shank Drill Bits - Machine Cutting Tools - Power Tools & Metalworking : Grainger Industrial Supply from grainger would this work?
will a HSS bit take time or is its rather quick. ive drilled through metal before and never experienced this kinda on difficulty

the bit i tried i was going at it for a solid 30-40 minutes and barely made it 1/4 of the way through. i wasnt forcing it either light to med pressure letting the bit do the work

I used that exact bit it took me about I dunno 5-10 minutes tops per S13 spindle.

with steel and iron you need to press very hard and go slow as hell. you will harden the metal otherwise. The bit is useless if it didn't get far at this point.

u can also just take it to a machine shop and have it done for a little cash

Yes you gotta put alot of muscle into it and go slow and hopefully you have a torquey drill.

machine shops have 'turn around times'. He should be able to get the drilling done in less than 1-2 hours.

well still no dice, bluehsark i see your in NNJ what machine shop would do it? called my local and he said no.

my car has been sitting for a week and ive gone through $140 in drill bits if i put and more pressure on drill bit i will knock the car off the jack stands

i will gladly pay someone to do it at this point

hammer drill is not for drilling metal, it is for drilling through concrete. use a corded drill, with a 1/2" chuck, it should provide the torque needed. also check your drill bit and make sure the tip isn't chipped. also check to see if it is still sharp, if you don't apply enough pressure, don't use lube, and run the drill at med-high rpm's, you can heat up the drill bit and it will be dull.
carbide will solve all your problems, but isn't cheap.
use a drill with a lot of torque and low speed. put lots of pressure on the drill bit and go somewhat slow. using cutting fluid will help keep the drill bit cool and sharp. shouldn't take more than a few minutes to drill through each hole.
since you can't put much pressure on it, and are willing to take it to a machine shop, try taking the knuckle off and drilling off the car so you can put adequate pressure on it.

at this point ive tried all methods listed,

the drill was capable of hammer but it was switched to drill not hammer. and was on the lower of the 2 available speeds and i have a can of cutting oil

i am pulling the spindles tomorrow and will be taking them to local machine shops to see if the holes can be enlarged. i called one today they said no. but im sure there are other shops around that like money.

ive spent way to much money on something that should be simple.

yeah, 140 is a lot to have spent on some drill bits. like i said, if you have a drill available, try again with the spindles off of the car and where you can apply the proper amount of pressure. wouldn't hurt to try before sending it off to a machine shop.

^this, at this point i could have just bought z32 brakes.

as far as taking them to a machine shop i dont forsee them charging me more then 60-70 bux to widen 2.5 holes since i did complete one and half of another.

i was looking at drill press's at home depot they have one for 119, thinking i could've just bought that . owell

i feel like a tool, went to a local machine shop and they said 30 bux and you can pick up tomorrow. thats cheaper then the drill rental alone.

I went through 3 bits for the first spindle. Then I realized I had to go slow for the second spindle.

If there's a way you can get it on the drill press then slow down the angular speed of the bit and keep it lubricated.
