replacing tranny syncros...
anybody ever done this? my 3rd gear always grinds going in, and im assuming its the synchro, would it be hard to replace them? also how much would it cost if i didnt do it myself?

It's easy if you can keep everything in order and not have ppl mess with it. Having a FSM helps a lot too.

Speaking of syncros I think mine are going but I am not sure. Like all the bottom gears: 2, 4, and Reverse have a hard time staying in gear(especially 4th). Like I'll shift to 4th, be riding down the road and it falls to neutral. Is this syncros. Sorry to jack your thread man, but I think it has some relevance.

Use a lower grade oil first
Could be that the oil in your tranny needs changing, is low on fluid or its too heavy. Also could be that the clutch is not fully disengaging, check the pedal height and travel |

I second the changing of fluids, if you haven't already. I did mine and it made a world of difference. I used Penzoil Syncromesh cause I've heard it's the same thing as GM syncromesh. Don't know if it's true but it was a lot better than the FACTORY fluid that was in there(since is was the original fluid for ~140k).

I prefer to change fluids first. Way cheaper than replacing the tranny
Use GL-4 oil NOT the GL-5 or you will loose your synchros Also, check your clutch hydrolics for damage, misadjustments or low oil even before changing your fluid |

i changed mine a while back, but not with name brand stuff, i have a spare KA tranny in my garage i could do, then swap the bell housings once i did it... any idea on pricing? i just dont wanna have to spend $200 on a tranny that has 100k miles or more, or one w/ gears worse than mine...

The problem you're describing sounds more like bearings. The syncros only do something when you shift. Test it by putting into gear.Smoothly accelerate then abruptly let off the gas. It should pop into neutral if your bearings are messed up.
