Too much drivetrain play

When I get under my car I can twist the driveshaft and make it clack at the termination point of the turn. It seems there is too much play. Would this be a problem with the pinion gear on the rear differential? I'm running a 240SX VLSD (4.083). This causes major problems while driving since the car doesn't want to shift right. It feels like the throw gets caught on the drivetrain slack. If I shift quick enough between certain gears I can negate this, but it's quite annoying.

I think this is due to excessive clearance between the ring and pinion, I am not sure how it works because I've never rebuilt a differential before; however, it makes sense that there is some "backlash" between the ring and pinion, such that the ring gear can load/unload and present a gap to the leading/trailing edge of the teeth on the pinion gear. Again, I havn't been into one before, but I can imagine how it might work.

The cheap option seems to be simply replace it with another vlsd. I will look into rebuilding/fixing mine when I get it out, but for right now, it still works fine, and it doesnt get worse despite me drifting random street corners for over a year now waiting for something to break.

Omg, I thought I was the only one. I've been through 2 differentials already with the same problem. The differential works fine, but has too much play.

Well, excessive wheel hop and trouble shifting is hard to ignore.
