Does anyone know if the 90-91 Mazda Protege 4wd's were available only in Canada, or other markets?  All I can find in US is front wheel drive.

They made 'em, but I'm pretty sure only Canada, and Japan and maybe some other countries got them.  Dave2u?

Vancouver that is a 323 though. And that car was freakin fast. But I have never seen a 4wd protoge here is montreal. But it would not surprise me since it is probably the same drivetrain and tranny as are in the 323... was the 323 gtx available in the states??

yes, and theyre wicked lil cars. they are rare. usdm 88-89 only (??). if ur lookin watch for bad trans, bad transaxle (AWD) and front wheel bearings....all very expensive to fix! i missed one in Chicago past Spring for $3800....even had some HKS mods. Sport Compact Car is buildin one as a project car. check their website archives....GREAT articles on it.

So, if I could find one in Canada, how hard would it be to get it to the US, and license it for driving?  Anyone?

Well you are f*ckin lucky 1, it costs like half for you after exchange, you would have to pay a little for duties etc.. but cars are technically supposed to be duty free (try to get a garage to order it for you or something they treat it like parts) then you will have to get it smog checked and a few things. But it is easier to take from canada then bringing into canada....
