another s13 HUD/cluster lights problem!!!!!
Alright so tonight I replace my 93 s13 coupe speedo sensor with a new one, because my old one from my single cam didn't work so I replaced it with a dual can for my rb20 swap couldn't tell because my cluster lights didn't come on,
This is a problem I've had for some time now, with the cluster lights coming off and on, I've had intermentint problems due to heat or just randomly cutting on while driving or when I start the car its just a hit or miss kinda thing. Now I have an aftermarket radio and the wires are all non grounded and I've checked the TCU and linked the pins 1 and 2 on the dimmer switch still nothing checked fuses everything Before you ask do my tail lights work yes both braking and when the headlights are on. There are no burnt traces on the TCU gotten countless dimmer switches and still no luck. There was a time I could bang on the dash and they would come on its just a rare thing. If you could give me a part number to the TCU or how to check a dimmer switch or the TCU please let me know I have this same problem with my other coupe and another thing the clock goes black when you turn the lights on. I'm pulling my hair out guys. |

probably some old and weak solder joints on the speedo display circuit board, i had the same thing on my 89 hud cluster. My was only effected by temperature, or my hitting the dash. I just took my out from the cluster and basically hit all the soldering joints again with fresh solder and good hot soldering iron, get one with a pretty small tip.....
Google "cracked solder joint on circuit board" if you don't know what to looks for. A magnifying glass would help at this point. If it looks questionable, hit it anyways, fresh solder wont hert......unless you put too much and it touches the other terminals....then ur just shorting things out at that point.... Another way to tell if you have the same thing that i did is to ground that small red wire behind the combo meter. You know...the one that is held down by that small Philips screw to the circuit board film...i ground my's out and all the speedo and illumination came back alive. give it a go...noting to loose that this point...sounds like your running out of options at this point. good luck |

Alright so I grounded out the red wire to the flex board and I have illumination again. However my speedo still doesnt work. I went and checked for bad solder joints on the digital speedos board and hit everything just in case. but I found there where two burnt marks inside the glass.
Anyway I ordered the cap to repair the board think the cap will fix the problem? also picking up 3 clusters for 60 bucks this weekend I know the sohc tach and the Dohc tach are different or wired different. But is there a difference between the two speedos? and on top of that Is there a way to test the speedo and the lower harness to the dash harness? |
