swap problem

ok, I have a 90 hatch. I just did a 96 KA24DE swap with all of the S13 DOHC parts necessary. The car turns over, but does not start. Checked the ECU codes and the codes came up as this: First code is a 21, second code is a 34. Is Either of these a reason why my motor is not firing up. And if so, how do I fix this? Oh, yeah, I have searched and searched in these forums, so please no SMARTASSES, AS I AM NOT IN THE MOOD.

Thanks,
Brandon

I believe that 21 is a primary ignition failure. 34 should be the knock sensor. If this is correct, it sounds like you didn't use the S13 distributor and ignitor.

Christ, you ever heard of punctuation? That's the most garbled bunch of letters I've ever seen.

s14slider- If you're using an S13 DOHC ECU and harness, code 21 is primary ignition, and IIRC code 34 is knock sensor. Double check the coil and transister for power.

Is this Brandon White? Give me call, I can help you out this weekend if you need it.

LUISGONZ, I said I have used all of the necessary components, which includes a 91 ECU, so you are WRONG.

YELLOWJACKET, I did use an S13 KA24DE distributor and coil. I have 2 lying around so I have tried both.

Russ, This is NOT Brandon White, this is Brandon Reed. I have not met you in person yet, but I have been waiting. If you still are offering to help, I would greatly appreciate it. I live in Oakwood, up aroung Gainesville/ Flowery Branch. If you can help, please call me at 770 536 2452. My little dumbass sister is always on the phone, so tell her you are my Boss, Russ. It is not hard to outsmart the little witch. Thanks again.

The codes do stand for what you guys are saying. 21 is main ignition signal and 34 is the Knock.

I know you said you did everything, but did you use a DOHC harness? Did you recheck all the wiring that has to be redone?

Brandon,
Have you tried removing the ECU from the harness and checking the wires/pin connectors between the distributor and the ECU?? You could have a short or a loose pin in one of the harness connectors. Take a continuity tester..the one with a buzzer in it & check the wires. Wiggle the wiring as it goes into the connecter to make sure you have a good connection. If the buzzer cuts out as you wiggle the wires then you've found your short/loose connection. If it's not your wires going to the distributor, then it's your distributor ground wire. Check to see if that's okay too.
As for your Knock Sensor code, (that seems to be common in a lot of S13's & S14's...it's not your sensor), check your ground. It's located on the engine block on the rear driver side portion of the motor, directly above the Oxygen sensor. Best if you just cut the connector & resolder the wires to a new ground grommet. If I recall correctly, a lot of your sensors use the engine block above the O2 sensor as a ground point. You might want to check that ground grommet out real good. Remember...if your motor mounts are old, all the movement from the engine can cause your grounding wires & harness wires to go bad over time. The tugging motion of the motor, (torquing on the mounts as you step on the gas), can short wires out internally..
Anyhow, hope this helps..
