Milled Head Twice... Compression Probs??
I have had my head milled twice. After I blew my latest head gasket the car is running like a lawn mower. I have several mods...everything but new pistons basically. I'm running a stock compression head gasket and am thinking that the head milling has raised the compression too much and it runs terribly. Feasible?

Try to be more descriptive of the running condition. Let see if we cant pin point this...

The head gasket was just replaced not too long ago. I have new ARP head studs in there, torqued to spec. The timing chain is set on the proper mating marks, although when the timing light is put to it, it is not exactly dead on - another indication of a milled down head, i hear. The spark plugs are covered with carbon deposits even though the car has only idled since the head gasket install. The running condition is as follows: Starts right up, runs extremely choppy and sounds somewhat like a muffled lawn mower. When revved up, the timing changes because it is a VVT, and when the rpms start climbing well above idle, the choppiness subsides. The compression numbers were at about 145-150 across the board. Please keep asking questions about the situation so I can help you help me...This beast is about a year over-do to be on the road and about 17 grand over budget! Thanks In Advance, Ryan P.S. - here are the engine mods just in case you need them to help narrow things down: z32 mafs, 740cc injectors, z32 fuel pump/filter, JWT ecu, 264 cams, stock compression head gasket, greddy valve springs, gt2871r turbo, hks manifold, koyo radiator, 3-3.75 inches all the way back w/ straight pipe, apex'i intake. |

my 2 cents is that high compression will not make your motor run choppy. and your compression isnt high..150psi? that's on the low side of a healthy motor. Sounds like your valve timing is off and there is an overlap in intake and exhaust valves being open so it's running like you got wild cams and could also explain losing compression. do you have stock cams? did you double check to see if they are installed right? that's all i can think of. of course the best thing would be to have someone look at it but we'll help you all we can.
mikespeed95 - he never said he has 2 mafs', the last (s) is for sensor

arent you the guy that's been having problems with your motor forever? i feel sorry for you man. You've spent 17 grand, i wonder how much driving enjoyment you've actually felt from the thing.

Did you try checking to see if your spark plugs are tightened down..sounds like what my s14 sr did because my sparks werent tightened on good enouge,
for the first 3000 RPM runs rough (like its not firing all cylinders) and then after 3000 rpm it runs really smooth and revs really easily..

I'm THAT guy, yes. I have driven it for about 400 miles total in the last year since I started the swap. As far as budget, I'm about 5k over, but I'm up to 17k in mods...just thought I'd be more dramatic. The spark plug idea I have tried...
I'll get it resolved one day. One sweet sweet day. Someone still MUST have something to suggest... Ryan |
