Tire Stretching Question (when you reverse it)

ive got a 235/40/17 on a 9" wide wheel... if i swap it to a 8" wide wheel, will i gain some height from unstretching the tire? i would imagine so, but im not sure... heres the story:

i bought a set of Nismo LM GT2's, and they have good 235/40/17s on back, but the front has shot up 215/40/17's. now, id like to run a 255/40/17 on back and just move the 235's up front. i test fitted the wheels on the car as is, and the front is just TOO low, and there is alot of fender gap. i cant get any lower b/c the lip would be literally touching the ground. so, the 235 up front will gain some clearence, im just wondering if ill gain even more from unstreching the tire (i hope so). thanks....

Ken

Definitely do something about that 35/45 series junk. Its trashy. Glad to see someone actually putting the proper tire sizes on their rims!

Stock 205/55-16 = 24.9" diameter...

235/45-17 = 25.3" diameter

255/40-17 = 25.0" diameter

I just switched from 245/40-17 on all 4 to 235/45-17 F and 255/40-17 R...no fitment or clearance issues with 17X9, +25 on all 4. They are clearly taller, but it's not so noticeable when driving.

clearance issues
you cant run a wide tire and a relatively low offset wheel and still clear everything up front, espeically with a higher then stock caster setting.

245/40 on a 17" is the closest to the stock ratio, that is why we're using 40 series tires on 17s..

i just ordered a full set of tires instead... 235/45/17, and 255/40/17. should fit perfect, i used the cacluator to get the sizes, and they are exactly the same sizes as what i was using prior to this (205/55/16). any smaller than that, and id have to lower the car to fill the fenders which i cant do b/c the lip is already too low... ill let ya know how it goes monday...

Hmm...But now you will have a taller tire up front...by a smidge, but I wonder if it will be noticeable. I was stuck in the same situation starting with a 205/55/16 and decided just to go 225/45 all the way around on a 9"...I do have a spare set of 255/40s though and might throw those on the rear.
