So a guy from the shop I usually get my cars worked on asked me if I'd be interested in selling my broke down 240, which I was. he took it to the shop, inspected, and said that since its got a blown headgasket and he'd have to basically remove the engine to remove the head and check for warp, he wanted me to come way down.

So the question is, do you really need to remove the entire engine? is replacing the headgasket on a 91 240 really so tough?

that guy is bs'ing you, no need to remove the entire engine. I'm not too sure how tough a job it is, but I do know you can leave the engine in no problem. Maybe someone with a bit more experience can shed some light as to the difficulty of the job. Might also help if you let us know what you were looking to get for it.

It's a 6-8hr job, in terms of billable hours.

I could do one in ~5hrs if I had to, but any shop will get $300-plus for labor, then $200 in materials, at least.

The only thing that is a real pain is reinstalling the timing components. You wouldn't need to remove the engine to replace the headgasket though. Remove the engine ppfffftt! This guy sounds like he is just trying to convince you to sell your car to him. Don't sell it! You'll kick yourself in the ass later for it.

Now since nobody wants to buy it as is I need to find some people in my area to come and help me do this (and my help I mean hold my hand through the whole thing LOL). So anyone in the saint louis area gimme a HOLLA!

What he is doing is the right way. He wants to take the engine out, have the block measured for intolerances than decked, than have the head measured and possibly decked as well. Its called the right way and its the only way most shops will do it. It will work in otherways but that is the proper
