broken horn + airbag light. anyone knows whats up?

a friend of mine bought a 300zx and has this same problem with it just like me. When he was at the shop to get tuned for inspection, the guy said that it has to do with some kind of a spring on the nissan steering column and that he seen a number of cases like this with the nissans. The part is supposedly $200 from the dealer, but maybe it can be found at a junkyard?

Can anyone point me in the right direction for more info? As of right now i have no idea what it's even called.

Thanks

PS: and i'm guessing the airbag light in this case will still stay because of the computer control that still remembers the code?

Spiral cable is broken. US manafacturers call it a clock spring.

Any salvage yard will have it.

Take the steering wheel off, then replace it. 3 minutes.

hey guys...my cruise and horn is also not working ever since last year... I was in an accident with a pole and the body is fixed. I replaced the airbag on the steering wheel but did not plug it up because I didn't want the airbag to blow. About a month ago, I changed the dash and took out the pass. side airbag and unplugged the airbag module under the rear pass. seat.

my question is, if I plug the harness from the driver side airbag to the yellow harness, would my horn and cruise control work? I did check the fuses and rely's and they are all fine...( i swapped rely's with my friend's car to see if mine was not working)... I do plan on getting an aftermarket steering wheel and quick release, and will follow "importnut's" write up to get the horn and cc working but for right now, I would like to use my accessories...

thanks for your help.

follow up question: Did nissan use the same part in their sedan type vehicles throughout the years? I have trouble sourcing one for an s14, but i've seen an altima and 200sx ones on ebay that do look similar to each other. Anyone knows if those will fit the 240sx?

Thanks

before you try to pull everything apart on that wheel youll need a tamper resistant T50 torx to get the airbag out of the way of the clock spring
and not all clock springs are the same, depending on what kind of controls are mounted on the wheel. if you want to find out call a nissan dealer parts dept. and ask them to cross reference. vin number will be a huge help for that though

alright. well the temper proof bits came in today, and i took the wheel off.

Here is what my clockspring looks like:

And here is a picture of a 95-99 sentra clockspring:

Now aside from the top markings, the mounting holes and the sensor connectors seem identical. It just doesn't make sense imho for nissan to make different clocksprings for cars in the same car line. Any thoughts?

Course not, it's not like they make different headlights, engines, or anything else like that for different cars.

so are you saying its safe to assume this thing will fit? I almost took mine apart just now, i can't find anything that could possibly be vehicle specific

I was being sarcastic.

Part numbers are not the same, and the cost difference retail is over $250 between the two.

hrmf. engines are engines. airbags are fairly universal things. Like injectors or wheel bolt patterns. Sarcasm was totally unnecessary.

Like i said, just took one apart. I cant see anything in there that would make it vehicle specific. WTF are these things for anyway? And where did you find the prices on them?

I've got a dealer price book from 2004, they gave it to me when the new one was released.

Since there's no research on it I say try it, there's no other way to know.

So whats the price of a brand new clock spring for our car?

I think i'll try out the sentra clockspring. After all, all this thing does is allow for wheel rotation without wire tangling. Ours has 5 wires coming in and 5 wires coming out, so does the sentra ones. If the connectors are wrong, or pins dont mach, no big deal to rewire. The only big problem i see possible is if the sentra has less revolutions lock to lock Well for $30 i think i'll try it out.

just an update for those who might be interrested. The 95-99 sentra clockspring actually does work, and fits perfectly w/ no modifications. Fixed the broken horn and cruise control, airbag light still flashes, but that was expected

Can anyone from Zilvia confirm if the Sentra clock spring does indeed work for the 240sx?

The guy above you made a post to confirm this...and his car is a Kouki S14 (I met him before). I would just go out and try this if its easier for you to access.

It's refreshing to know that zilvia can still dish out usefull information.
