After much searching... I just bought a '93 fastback... motor with 70000 miles, body with 135000 miles for $3200 - a Canadian car (in Texas now)

Somthing about this one stood out from the others... probably the LSD.

anyways I have a few Q's

1.) Is it normal to remove the cap on the valve cover and have air shoot out (pulse out) as if its pressurized when the car is running?

2.)I'm getting alot of vibration in 5th gear at 40-46 mph under light acceleration, and also when i let off the gas... vibrates the car pretty hard.. like a massage... is this normal?

3.) also the car decelerates fairly quickly, 5th gear even at 2000-1800 rpm when I let off the gas (i'm worried about this old transmission) <-- sorry this may seem like a really dumb question, been a loooong time since I drove a manual

I'm getting a fairly loud rattle/rubbing/scraping sound from the front of the motor.. So im going to be removing the valve cover tomorrow, and possibly the front of the engine to take a look at the timing chain. Ill post my experience with that if anyones interested (Ive heard this is a common problem with these motors)

I'd really appreciate it if any1 can answer any of these questions...!

cya!

ill be as nice as i can be

1) yes its normal for air to shoot out its called crank pressure and dont do it u might get a MIL because of vacuum leak

2) its normal and what are u doing in 5th @ 46 mph the gear is actually overdrive. its like riding a mountain bike in the largest gear at low speed(ur legs would be shaking 2)

3) stick cars decelarete quicker than automatics and if ur tranny was shot it would be the synchros @ that milage.

the rattle might be ur tensioner on the chain and thats normal 2

Are you saying i Shouldnt be in 5th gear at that speed? The Manual Itself says to be in 5th gear at 40mph or higher for cruising

Thanks for the answers

I have to agree with daywalker bout your shifting. You won't KILL the car or anything, but you probably want to still be in 4th at 46 mph. hell sometimes i'm still in third

I get shaking too at 40-46 mph in 5th, but only when accellerating. I think any shaking is bad because you are stressing the engine, so if you are going to accellerate, go into 4th, and save 5th for cruising.

my 2 cents.

actually, the manual I have say 45 is the point to shift for best fuel econ. and no rattle. Between 40-45, you'll be ok on a down hill acceleration, not uphill.

Instead of worring about what your mph are look at your tach.
That is a better way to determine when you should shift.

After you've been drivin fer a while then ya won't even need ta look at the tach, you'll know when to shift just by the way it "feels" and sounds.

damn, some times I'm still in second at that speed! But I drive hard and usually don't shift until at least 5 grand and when I'm on it real hard it's closer ta 7!

And yes, you are putting too much stress on the engine when it "shakes" like that and I bet it "knocks" when ya do that too, don't it?
