how wide of a tire can i put on a 91 240sx in the back.  i was looking to buy some 17in rims the front would be 17x7 and the back was going to be 17x9.  can i fit a 17x9 rim in the back with no problems. please help!!!!!!!

First off, why do you want to go two full inches wider in the rear.  That's gonna throw the car's handling balance off and cause it to push...especially if you don't have gobs of power at you dispense.
But to answer your question...9's will fit, but you have to be down-right scientific with offset and possibly tinker with the alignment to get them under there.  They won't fit under the front fenders.

personally I'm thinkin about 7.5's-8's up front, and 8.5's in rear.  The s-14 can take wider tires than the s13

in a drift video i have a guy is running 18x9 with 235/40/18 and 17x8 with 215/40/17 very nice looking

If you're gonna stagger, I'd at least put 8's in the front and 9's in the back.  It's not gonna completely screw the car up, it's just not ideal IMO.  I'm also willing to bet that drifter was putting down some pretty serious power, too.

Thats mighty odd that a drifter would use 18's in the back, since that would creat more rotating mass, and actually rob power.  Most drifters prefer the smaller wheels.  3 reasons.
1.  Lower rotating mass.  easier to break loose
2.  Cheaper Tires.  They go through them fast.  I've actually heard guys refer to buying new tires as "Reloading" lol
3.  Cheaper Wheels.  They bang, bend and bruise them pretty bad.

of course it will mess with your handling..
your car is designed for a certain turn in (understeer or oversteer) and when you put larger tires on the back, it makes the rear tires grip more because the surface area has increased, and friction has increased. when you turn in with the stock tires on a 240, the back can hang out (pretty easily), which is called oversteer and is one of the blessings that the 240 has to its fine handling. when you turn in with stock fronts and wider rear tires, the back tires wont slide, and the fronts will be the first to break loose, which is called under steer. I personally car with any type of handling prowess to have more than a little but of understeer on initial turnin.
