So I'm ordering a PFC next week and have some ?'s

I'm gonna order my PFC for my s14 sr next week and I'm wondering a few things.
1. I know its a "plug and play" system that I can install and start the car up with, however is it safe to run it like this until I can save up to get it tuned?
2. I know that it has preprogramed settings for exhaust, fmic, etc. that can be controlled through the commander. My question is how easy is it to input this via the commander. Could a noob like me navigate the menu? Meaning, is it pretty straight foward?
3. Does it control the VTC engagement on the engine? This is not as critical but I was curious about it.

Please answer as honestly as possible. I don't need opinions on other ecu's that can be had for a few more dollars or those for a few less. I had been seriously considering the Haltech that johngriff has been pushing lately but I fried my ecu and I need to get the car running right asap. Thanks in advance for any info.
