Tach Problems, CA18 vs SR20 VS KAE??

I have spent the last hour looking through the search, but what is the reason that the old clusters (sohc) don't work for the tach signal? I have am fixing an SR that is using a CA computer... and get no tach signal unless I use a pulsar gauge cluster. From what I can tell the Sunny is using a positive pulsing signal to run the tach and that is why it works, but the stock one wants a negative pulsing signal (or vice versa, I can't remember off the top of my head) is this the problem for all CA ecu's or is it an SR problem as well? And is there a converter I can get to make this work, or do I have to go find an CA18 gauge cluster or something like that?
