s13 5 lug swap question

I really hate asking this but I have what I hope is a simple question.
After installing my new front 5 lug hubs on my s13 I noticed that they have quite a bit of play. I got the hubs in a trade so I'm not sure what kind they are but they look to be Ichiba's.
Any other time I've done a 5 lug swap I've either never noticed the play or never had this problem. The hub will actually slide towards and away from the brake shield ( just using that as a reference ) a good half inch or possibly more. Is this normal?
And yes I've been googling this all effin morning but I have been unable to find any helpful information other than it looks like some hubs require a spacer or washer which I do not have.
