My car dies

I was on my way home from a club around 2am early Saturday morning. I noticed my gauge cluster lights weren't as bright as always. I didn't think anything of it, just thought it was my imagination. Halfway home, I see a CHP unit on the side of the freeway, and me going 80, I pressed the brakes to slow down a bit. At that point, my headunit turns off. I thought to myself it was just a loose connection with the wiring of the headunit. I get on the offramp and downshift into 2nd. I press the gas but noticed immediately a lack of power. I also can't go past 3k RPMs. I shift into 3rd and I also cant get past 3k RPMs. I try flooring it, but it's the same. My car starts slowing down and then just shuts off. I put it into neutral so it can roll to the side of the road, where I got it towed back to my house. It won't start anymore. The starter clicks, but it doesn't turn over.

What the hell is wrong with my car? Before I bring the battery to get it charged and checked, and before I get another starter and alternator, I just wanted to ask you guys if you experienced this problem before, so it'll save me some headache.

Thanks. Sorry for the long post.
