Got some problems, need help.

hi, i just purchased a 91 240 and i need some help. i bought it non running. they guy said it just stopped running and he tried changing the distibutor. i figured he did something wrong and messed up timing but i checked it manually and seems to be okay. i changed plugs and wires and it sounded a little better when cranking it. then i noticed that the guage said there was no gas, put gas in and crossed my fingers, but i didnt get that lucky. it started but would die, i would have to keep my foot on the pedal to keep it running. but theres a LOUD tapping coming from under valve cover, so im guessing something with the valves is wrong. when i rev it, the tapping gets way louder and faster. and it also wont rev past 3.5k also i checked the new plugs and it was completely black and alot of gas on it, im also guesing im running hella rich. then i changed my oil and it seemed to barely stay alive w/o keeping my foot on the gas. still wouldnt rev past 3.5k what should i do? how do i get my car not to run so rich? and what do i do about the tapping? sorry for the long descrption but i just wana get my "new" car running.
