KA Lazarus Touch on KA24DE

Hi, TigerFox here, first post, hopefully first of many if this works out:

I have come into possession of a KA24DE and transmission pulled from a Silvia 13, all of which are victim to a vehicle-totaling fire (over-boost much?). My intentions are to fully restore the engine and transmission and transplant the resulting mechanized wonder into my Silvia-2000 platform Datsun S110.

Does anyone have experience restoring fire-damaged engines?
Is there anything I should know besides the obvious take-it-to-a-machine-shop-and-cry?

The battery is melted and ignition wires and electrical harness are burnt to the bare wire, yet the oil cap is totally undamaged. Twisting off the oil cap reveals an orangish-gunked covered cam, the gunk of which is wiped off with a bare finger (no apparent skin corrosion), to reveal a still-silver-colored cam (this is the extent of the inspection I have been able to do). Knowing this, what is the likelihood the transmission is still in fighting shape, and may not require an immediate rebuild?

Is the KA24DE largely unchanged throughout the USDM Silvia lineage, therefore all parts are identical throughout the 1992-1998 run, or were improvements made to the outermost bolt-on components (alternator, oil pump...)? Is there an internal difference between earlier KA24DE engines, or have the internals remained identical throughout the lineup?

Would anyone happen to know of a book detailing specifically the overhaul of a KA24DE engine and accompanying transmission?

I ask of such information because this is my one shot at saving my 1983 Datsun from the scrap yard, the Z22E and KA24DE exhaust notes aren't distinct enough to hurt my feelings using newer Nissan guts in my older Nissan car, and California Smog Legal is the word of the day. If there's anything I should know besides Hah! Good Luck! and Plant in shop, just add money I'd appreciate it.

I'm not terribly interested in turbo-charging or Stweet Wacing or otherwise propelling my car to gravitational escape velocity with NISMO-brand go-fast bits, I just need to build an engine that works, preferably a fresh zero-mile rebuild.
