Ok here's the deal:
I bought my '93 Coupe (KA) last Saturday. The next day (Sunday) the airconditioner worked fine. Then on Monday, it never blew cold or even remotely cool air. So I took it to my mechanic, and he says the compressor is out. He quoted me $700-$800 for a new compressor and probably around $300 for a used one. Does anyone know where I can get a good, cheap, *working* compressor, or do I just need to sell the thing and make 1g off of it or so? I know some of you may not think an A/C is necessary, but it is already 95 deg. F here in Oklahoma!!! |

WTF does "the compressor is out" mean.
Does it not have a charge? Is the clutch engaging but the compressor is not working? Is the clutch not engaging? Ask him what exactly is wrong with it. You might want to consider a seccond opinion. |

Go to another mechanic and see what he says. Shit, before u do that, check the compressor urself. If I remember correctly, it should be the far right pulley. Now, if the belt is fucked up, slacked, broken, or whatever, then u know u have to change it. If u see that it looks and feels good, THEN go to a mech and see what he says, if he thinks that the compressor is messed up, then go to ur local junk yard and buy a used compressor, and no way in hell would that thing cost 300, thats a load of shit

Hey I would do all they the other guys said plus one thing more. If you to see if it's the charge, you can goto Autozone, Pep Boys ect. and buy a R-134a retrofit kit. It's not more then $40 with a couple of cans of R-134a. It's simple, just follow the directions on back of the box. Charge it up and hope it works. I did this on my wife's Celica. It's much cheaper this way, rather then getting a charge of the factory freon.(not sure what it is, R-22? Stuff is expensive.) But yeah get a second, and a third guy to look at it. Don't say you went to another mechanic and he said bad compressor. That guy might rip you off too.
hope that helps

Thats a rediculously high quote anyway for a compressor. I'm sure you could find one real cheap at a junkyard and they arent hard to install.
Only thing to worry about would be the R134a in the lines, none came out when I pulled the comressor, but I dont know if its not supposed to be in that part when its off, or just that mine all leaked out when the condensor got smashed in. |
