Need help- Doing research on importing a JDM vehicle and need to know my options. I have read around that a car from Japan can only be considered a race car if brought to the states (in which the vehicle would be coming to North Carolina). Would going to Insurance company or DMV be a good idea? OR trying to find a import registration agent. Need to know facts so when I contact seller I know my options instead of being too clueless. And if this is really worth doing.

www.j's-garage.com, or somethin like that. u can get all the information u need on importing a car.

as far as registration goes, iirc, u can't register a car if it has no history of ever being sold in the US. except the Skyline, of course. however, u can register a foreign car if it's 25 yrs or older.

importing a car could be worth it, depending on what u use the car for, and if it's a car that u like. hell, it'd hafta be THE car that u LOVE if u'd be importing it. also, importing a car, usually, turns out to be the same price of the car. so it's like buying 2 cars, essentially.

Well j-garage only tells you so much information. I would be using the car for personal use and not as a "race car" plus it will be almost new. 1999 is the year of the car. So with that said, I am still questioning/wondering things. We dont have emissions but to bring it over here it would have to pass several check ups im sure. As far as getting a plate, insurance, and driving it as my daily driver ... I am wondering if I am wasting my time. I mean this is my dream car so I have the money to do it, but I dont know if it is feasible.

National Highway traffic safety administration

This is exactly what the U.S. Gov wants when someone wants to import a car. Everything you need to know about rules regs. etc. are in here. Everything you have to do is in here. This is who sets the template for all imported vehicles.
