Hey guys, I need some advice. I have the option of buying a stock s13 redtop sr (as I originally planned) or for $350 more an s13 redtop sr with an s14 t28, hks tubular manifold, and greddy turbo outlet. I know I would be spending about 5x more if I were to buy this stuff new, but I'm a bit hesitant to buy a motor already modified. I don't know if the 2 or 3 extra psi I could run would be worth the possible problems I would face buying a motor that has undoubtedly been run hard. Keep in mind this is my first time buying a motor, let alone swapping it. What would you do?

well it depends, i'd rather have a motorset that was well taken care of/modified than one not tooken care of/modded. There is really no way to determine that. When buying used engines, its really a hit and miss. Mainly the thing id do, is look at the past history of the place you are purchasing it from. Do their customers have compliments or complaints about them?? But yes if I were you, i'd buy the redtop w/t28.

Id go with the one with the T28 hopefully if someone had modified it they also had taken good care of the engine or else they beat it to hell. Just depends on the prior usage.

get a compression test on both. have them take off the valve cover and oil pan and see what it looks like inside. check if all of the parts are there and not damaged. that can help your decision.

I think the best thing to do is to get a stock sr20 becuse when a clip has a t28 on it they were doing some thing with it. check the oil open the oil top on the value cover and check if its not thick and black black becuse when the oil pump gose out its not fun to change.

if u cant check the compression.

get the t28 with hks manifold and greddy outlet.
either way u have a chance the motor sucks.

at least get the manifold turbo and outlet for 350.
t28 makes a difference.

Well it's one of those life making decisions that's a 50/50. Meaning well if you buy a modded one, yeah it's cool it's modded but you don't know if someone beat the crap out of it prior to your ownership. Or you can play it safe by buying one that's not modded at all. I chose a front clip for my car that had no mod on it what so ever and it's done me right so far (knock on wood). But if you really want to be safe then try and get ahold of an automatic SR engine and mod it to be five speed compatible. It's harder to beat up an auto engine.

i disagree that its harder to beat on a motor with an auto tranny, most times people dont pay as close attention to their motor or car in general if they have auto trannys. dont change the oil as often ect. ect. plus there is a difference between the pilot bushings (the auto version is called the pilot converter) (page 94 FSM for small picture) for a 5spd and an auto. you have to change them and its rather a bitch to get the pilot converter out. i had to cut mine out. your new manual trans will shift like shit if you leave this part in. i would go with the upgraded motor and check it over very closely befor you install it. hope this helps.

I agree with checking them over before buying them if possible. Also look at the condition of the turbo itself, check for shaft play. A big busted turbo is worse than a smaller one that is in good condition. If not possible then buy the modded one because usually people who mod their rides also take good care of them. If the motor ends up being shot at least you have 350+$ in upgrades already on your car.
